Holisal for children: instructions for use

Gel "Cholisal" is a popular drug in dental practice, because it acts locally, while simultaneously reducing pain, eliminating inflammation and destroying bacteria. This medicine helps treat gingivitis, stomatitis, and other diseases of the oropharynx. But before using the gel in childhood, you should learn more about its composition, reasons for use and dosages allowed for children.

Release form

The drug is manufactured in Poland and sold in aluminum tubes containing 10 grams of transparent gel. It is colorless and homogeneous, smelling like anise oil. Other dosage forms (ointment, cream, lozenges, and so on) called "Holisal" are not produced.

Composition

The effect of "Holisal" is due to two active compounds at once. One of them is choline salicylate, which is contained in one gram of the drug at a dose of 87.1 mg. The second active ingredient of the drug is called cetalkonium chloride. Its dosage in 1 gram of gel is 100 mcg.

Among the inactive ingredients of Cholisal are glycerol, 96% ethanol and hyetellose. The drug also contains propyl and methyl parahydroxybenzoate. The smell of the gel is due to anise seed oil, and for a more liquid structure, all auxiliary components are supplemented with water.

Operating principle

Thanks to the combination of two active ingredients, Cholisal is a combined local remedy.

Choline salicylate in its composition is a group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (refers to derivatives of salicylic acid), therefore it has all the effects that NSAIDs have. This compound affects cyclooxygenase, which leads to inhibition of the production of interleukin 1 and prostaglandins, and also affects neutrophils and macrophages. This gives the gel anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In addition, choline salicylate has some antifungal and antibacterial effects.

Cetalkonium chloride belongs to antiseptic agents, as it can act on various bacteria, as well as on viral particles and fungi. The addition of such a compound to the gel helps to prevent suppuration of the damaged mucous membrane, as well as fungal and viral complications.

Since the base of "Holisal" is alcohol-containing, gel-like and has good adhesive properties, the effect after treatment develops very quickly (within two to three minutes) and lasts a fairly long period (up to 8 hours), since the active substances are retained on the surface of the mucous membrane and penetrate well into it.

Indications

"Cholisalom" is used to treat the mucous membrane of the oral cavity when it is necessary to eliminate pain and inflammation. The medicine is prescribed for:

  • stomatitis, provoked by various reasons;
  • inflammation of the periodontal;
  • gingivitis;
  • mucosal injury;
  • cheilitis or other diseases of the lips;
  • carrying out small surgical procedures in the oral cavity;
  • lichen planus that has affected the oral cavity;
  • oral candidiasis;
  • sore throat;
  • Stevens-Jones syndrome, if there is a lesion of the mucous membrane in the mouth.

Can it be used for teething?

Indeed, one of the indications for the use of "Cholisal" is painful sensations that appear in the child's mouth during the eruption of milk or permanent teeth. The first teeth begin to cut in babies at the age of 5-6 months, but pain, itching and other unpleasant sensations can bother a few weeks before the appearance of a new tooth.

Some kids endure this time steadfastly and teeth appear almost imperceptibly for their parents. Other toddlers do not tolerate pain and discomfort, so they start to be capricious and cry, and their sleep and appetite may deteriorate. It is in such cases that local agents with anesthetic effect are used, including Holisal.

At what age is it allowed?

According to the annotation to the gel, the use of "Holisal" in children is safe from 1 year old. If you need to use it in an infant who is not yet a year old, you should consult your doctor.

Treatment with the preparation of the oral cavity of infants is permissible only under the supervision of a doctor.

Contraindications

It is impossible to use "Cholisal" in childhood only if a small patient is found to be hypersensitive to choline salicylate or another ingredient of the gel.

Side effects

Sometimes, immediately after treatment with "Cholisal", the child begins to complain of a burning sensation, which soon passes on its own and does not require treatment cancellation.

In rare cases, the medication causes skin rashes or other allergic reactions, which is why further use must be discarded.

Instructions for use

The gel is used exclusively to place on the surface of the oral mucosa. If "Holisal" was prescribed for anesthesia, then the treatment is carried out before meals. In other cases, it is recommended to lubricate the mucous membrane with medicine after meals and at night.

The optimal frequency of using the medication is 2-3 times a day, and the duration of use is determined individually. A single dosage of "Holisal" for a child is considered a strip of gel 5 mm long. To apply the medicine, wash your hands and squeeze the medicine onto your finger. Further, an adult with massaging movements with slight pressure should rub the gel into the affected area.

Overdose

Since "Holisal" acts only on the areas of application, there have been no cases of an overdose of such a drug until now.

Interaction with other drugs

The drug can be prescribed together with any other medications, since it does not have a systemic effect.

If you use it in higher dosages, then "Cholisal" is able to enhance the effects of other drugs from the group of anti-inflammatory drugs with a non-steroidal structure.

Terms of sale

Since Cholisal is an over-the-counter medicine, it can be bought without any difficulty. The price of the gel in different pharmacies is 330-370 rubles per tube.

Storage conditions

It is recommended to keep "Holisal" at home in a place where a child cannot find it. You should not allow both heating the medicine (above +25 degrees) and freezing it. Both sealed and already opened tubes are good for 3 years from the date of manufacture marked on the package.

Reviews

In most cases, the use of "Holisal" is answered positively. In childhood, this drug is especially in demand for painful sensations when teeth are being cut. It also helps treat thrush in the mouth, gum fistula, gum disease, and many other dental problems, according to moms.

In addition, the taste of the medicine is pleasant, and the medicine is consumed quite sparingly. In this case, an allergy to the gel occurs in isolated cases, but there are complaints of a tingling and burning sensation after application. The disadvantages of "Holisal" include its high cost.
