Metrogyl Denta for children: instructions for use

In childhood, oral diseases occur quite often. When treating them, local agents are used that affect only the affected area. One of the most popular drugs can be called "Metrogyl Denta", the instructions for the use of which are very simple and straightforward. Not all parents know if it can be used for children and how such a medication works on the child's body.

Release form and composition

The drug is produced in only one form - in the form of a dental gel. It is represented by a soft white mass, packaged in plastic tubes of 20 g.

The action of the drug is due to two components at once:

  • Chlorhexidine bigluconate at a dose of 0.5 mg per 1 g of medication. This compound is a 20% chlorhexidine solution.
  • Metronidazole in the form of benzoate. In 1 g of gel, it is contained in a dosage of 10 mg (if converted to metronidazole).

Disodium edetate, sodium hydroxide, carbomer-980 and levomenthol are additions to these substances. There are also ingredients such as sodium saccharinate, water and propylene glycol in the gel.

Operating principle

"Metrogyl Denta" is an antimicrobial drug, since metronidazole in its composition acts on various microorganisms that provoke oral infections, and chlorhexidine has antiseptic properties. The medicine affects bacteroids, fusobacteria, neisseria. In this case, the medicine acts only locally and is almost not absorbed into the blood.

Indications

"Metrogyl Denta" is used for children:

  • with gingivitis;
  • with periodontitis;
  • with aphthous stomatitis;
  • with cheilitis;
  • with periodontitis;

At what age is it prescribed?

The gel is not used for children under 6 years of age. If it is necessary to prescribe treatment to a younger patient, the doctor selects another medication.

Contraindications

"Metrogyl Denta" should not treat the oral mucosa in children with individual intolerance to chlorhexidine, metronidazole or any of the auxiliary ingredients of the gel.

Side effects

Sometimes a child after treatment with "Metrogyl Denta" develops an allergy, which can manifest itself as hives, itching of the skin and other reactions. The drug can cause headaches.

Instructions for use

The medicine is used only locally and is prescribed by dentists for an average of 7-10 days. Usually, only the affected areas are lubricated with gel (twice a day). The drug can be applied with your fingers or a cotton swab. After processing for at least 30 minutes, no food or drink should be given to the child. Rinse off the medication is not required.

Overdose and drug interactions

If a child accidentally swallows a large amount of Metrogyl Denta, it will lead to nausea, dizziness, vomiting, paresthesias and other negative symptoms. To eliminate them, you need to rinse the stomach and consult a doctor.

Since the medication acts only locally, it can be prescribed simultaneously with any other medications. The manufacturer does not mention the incompatibility of the gel with other drugs.

Terms of sale and storage

"Metrogyl Denta" is an over-the-counter medicine, therefore it is freely sold in pharmacies. The average price of one tube is 210-230 rubles. Store the medication at home in a place hidden from small children, at temperatures up to +25 degrees. If the shelf life of the drug, which is 3 years, has already expired, it is unacceptable to lubricate the child's oral mucosa with gel.

Reviews

The use of "Metrogyl Dent" for children is usually given a positive response. Parents confirm the high effectiveness of such a gel for various diseases in the oral cavity and, in most cases, note that no adverse reactions to the drug appear. The disadvantage of the tool is called the rapid removal from the treated area due to contact with saliva. Sometimes they also complain about the high cost, because of which some prefer analogs at a lower price.
