Orasept for children: instructions for use

Antiseptic medications often come to the aid of a sore throat that can relieve pain, target harmful bacteria, and speed up healing. One such effective local remedy is the Orasept spray. It is often prescribed for various diseases of the throat for both adult patients and children.

Release form and composition

"Orasept" is produced in transparent plastic bottles with a dispenser, inside which is 177 ml of bright red liquid with cherry flavor.

The main ingredient of such a drug is phenol, which is presented in 1 ml of a solution with a dosage of 14 mg, that is, at a concentration of 1.4%. Glycerin and purified water are added to it so that the product is liquid and easy to spray. For a sweet taste, the preparation contains sodium saccharin, and the red dye and cherry flavoring provide a bright color and pleasant taste of the drug.

How does it work?

The phenol contained in Orasept has no toxic effect, as its concentration is low.

When diluted, this substance is capable of destroying bacteria and fungi. In addition to this antiseptic effect, the water-glycerin solution of phenol has an anesthetic effect, which is important for pain in the mouth. Due to the presence of glycerin, the preparation additionally softens the mucous membrane.

Indications

"Orasept" is in demand for various diseases of the pharynx and oral cavity, which are characterized by pain and inflammation. This spray is used for:

  • sore throat;
  • periodontitis;
  • stomatitis;
  • tonsillitis;
  • gingivitis;
  • pharyngitis.

In addition, treatment with "Orasept" is used for various dental procedures and other manipulations in the oral cavity or in the pharynx.

Is it used in childhood?

The use of "Orasept" is prohibited for children under 2 years of age. Spraying the throat or oral cavity of children aged 2-12 years should be carried out only under the supervision of an adult.

Contraindications

The use of "Orasept" is strictly prohibited in case of hypersensitivity to phenol or any auxiliary ingredient of the drug.

The drug should also not be used in children with impaired liver function or severe kidney disease, since such diseases affect phenol metabolism. Irrigation with "Orasept" is contraindicated in epiglottitis. The tool is also not used if the lesion of the mucous membrane is very extensive.

Side effects

During treatment with "Orasept", in rare cases, severe sore throat, fever, rash on the body, vomiting, headache, pain, severe nausea and other symptoms occur.

When they appear, you must immediately abandon irrigation and consult a doctor. The spray does not affect the condition of the teeth, therefore, under its action, the enamel is not damaged.

Instructions for use

The drug is sprayed with one click on the affected area up to three times a day. Maintain intervals of 2-4 hours between sprays. If the child is 12 years old, the treatment frequency can be increased up to 5 times. The drug can be swallowed.

As for the duration of treatment, Orasept can only be used for several days. The maximum application period of the spray is one week. If, after 5-7 days from the start of treatment, symptoms of oropharyngeal lesions still remain, the child should be shown to a doctor in order to change the treatment regimen.

Overdose

Too high a dose of "Orasept" adversely affects the patient's condition and can provoke dizziness, vomiting, sweating, pain at the site of treatment, weakness, diarrhea and other symptoms.

With a significant overdose, the central nervous system is suppressed and the internal organs are damaged, and a lethal outcome is also possible (if the patient receives more than 1 g of phenol). Upon discovering an overdose, it is recommended to flush the stomach and seek medical attention.

Drug interactions

"Orasept" is often used in conjunction with other drugs that are prescribed for the inflammatory process in the oropharynx, for example, with antibiotics or sulfa drugs. However, there are medications, the use of which "Orasept" should be consulted with a doctor. These include MAO inhibitors, vasoconstrictors, hypnotics, and other medications.

Terms of sale and storage

You can easily buy a spray in a pharmacy, since such a medication is a group of non-prescription drugs. The shelf life of the solution is 2 years and is indicated on the bottle. Storage of the drug is recommended at room temperature, and the solution cannot be frozen. To eliminate the risk of overdose, "Orasept" should be safely hidden from children.

Reviews

You can find many positive reviews about the use of Orasept, in which the medicine is called effective and pleasant to the taste. Among its disadvantages, it is noted that the price is high, and it can be difficult to find a drug in pharmacies.

In addition, many mothers do not dare to use "Orasept" because of the presence of phenol in the composition, although its concentration is considered safe by doctors, and also because of the dye and flavoring, to which babies are allergic.

Analogs

If, for some reason, Orasept cannot be used in the treatment of throat or any dental diseases, it can be replaced with another local remedy. The doctor will recommend one of these analogues.

  • Tantum Verde. This spray contains benzydamine, which has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antimicrobial effects. It can be sprayed onto the oropharynx membrane for children over three years old or replaced with Tantum Verde tablets, which have a mint flavor, a square shape and a green color. In addition, a solution is also released under this name, but it is prescribed only from the age of 12.
  • "Stomatidin". This solution has antiseptic properties due to the presence of hexetidine in the composition. It is used in children over five years of age for the treatment of stomatitis, sore throats and other pathologies, in which Orasept is also used. Instead of "Stomatidin", analogs with the same active ingredient, for example, "Maxicold Lor" or "Hexoral", can also be prescribed.
  • "Ingalipt"... Such a combination medicine acts on microorganisms that provoke an inflammatory process in the oropharynx. This spray is prescribed for patients over three years old with laryngitis, stomatitis, tonsillitis and other diseases.
  • Miramistin. This antiseptic liquid destroys many bacteria and fungi, as well as viruses, therefore it is often used for angina, gingivitis and other pathologies. One of the main advantages of such a remedy is its safety at any age, thanks to which Miramistin is prescribed even to infants.
  • Oralsept. Despite the similar name, this medicine works thanks to benzydamine, like Tantum Verde. This spray is in demand for inflammation of the oral mucosa, laryngitis and other throat diseases. It is prescribed for children over three years old.
