What is pyospermia and how does it affect conception?

Among male ailments, there are quite dangerous ones that threaten not only reproductive health. Pyospermia also belongs to such ailments. This pathology affects a man's fertility, often it is a signal that there are serious problems in the body. In this article we will tell you more about what this ailment is, how to treat it and how it affects the conception and bearing of a child.

What it is?

Pyospermia is the appearance of pus in semen. Most often, this condition indicates the presence of a purulent inflammatory process in the male genitourinary system.... At the same time, the sperm changes its consistency: it becomes thicker. Its color also changes: the seminal fluid becomes greenish, grayish, yellow with gray shades. There is also an unpleasant odor characteristic of a purulent process.

Inflammation can be localized in any part of the male genitourinary system: in the urethra, prostate gland, seminal vesicles or the epididymis of the male sex glands - the testes. Pathogens that cause purulent inflammation, and usually bacteria, in the course of their life, release toxins that adversely affect the germ cells.

Influence on conception

Spermatozoa under the influence of bacterial toxins become more "sluggish", sedentary, their morphological structure is disturbed - the number of healthy and full-fledged germ cells is significantly reduced.

All this creates great difficulties with conception: a sedentary sperm is simply not able to get to the egg, and a faster, but deformed sperm with a changed head can fertilize, but it carries an inferior set of chromosomes, which increases the likelihood of miscarriage, frozen pregnancy, childbirth with chromosomal pathologies.

Therefore, doctors strongly advise against planning a pregnancy until a man is completely cured of pyospermia. Fortunately, with a timely visit to the doctor, the pathology can be cured with full preservation of reproductive functions.

Considering that spermatogenesis is a rather lengthy process and a man needs about 3 months to renew the composition of the sperm, it is best to start planning a pregnancy 4-5 months after a man is completely cured.

In fairness, it should be noted that a wife's pregnancy with pyospermia in a husband does not necessarily end with spontaneous interruption or the birth of a child with chromosomal pathologies. But such a possibility still exists and cannot be ignored.

Symptoms and Signs

Despite the fact that pus in semen is a sign of inflammation, a man may not feel any of its symptoms. Pyospermia is often latent. If the immune system is not weakened in the stronger sex, pyospermia can go away on its own. The body's natural defenses are able to cope with minor inflammation. But in the modern world there are almost no people with strong immunity, and therefore more and more men with complaints of pus in the ejaculate turn to doctors.

At the initial stage, pyospermia may manifest itself with a slight burning sensation during urination, aching pain in the groin. Gradually, as the inflammation develops, a man may experience severe headaches, severe weakness, as well as a feeling of swelling and mild pain in the groin. However, it should be noted that the symptomatic picture manifests itself in only 10% of men with pyospermia. Others can guess about the disease only by the changed type of sperm and by its unpleasant smell.

Causes of occurrence

Among the most common causes of pyospermia is testicular or prostate tuberculosis. Simpler inflammatory ailments can also lead to a serious purulent inflammatory process, if a man does not give them due attention in a timely manner. Such diseases include urethritis, epididymitis, orchitis. Often, pyospermia is a "echo" of old vesiculitis, untreated prostatitis and other male diseases.

False pyospermia is an abnormality in which the semen is mixed with purulent masses already in the process of passing through the vas deferens. An anomaly is considered to be true, in which pus mixes with sperm earlier.

Diagnostics

For correct and effective treatment, it is imperative to establish the true reason why purulent masses penetrate into the ejaculate. For this, the urologist appoints the man a comprehensive examination, which is always desirable to start with a spermogram. Typically, pyospermia is closely "adjacent" to teratozoospermia, asthenospermia and other anomalies, because the quality of spermatozoa in contact with such an aggressive environment as pus is significantly reduced. By the volume of violations identified in the spermogram, it will be possible to judge how long the inflammatory process has been in a man, which is of great importance for the appointment of the correct therapy.

Without fail, a man undergoes an ultrasound of the pelvic organs, as well as a manual examination of the prostate and, if necessary, a rectal ultrasound. Blood is donated for genital infections, HIV, syphilis, venereal diseases. The analysis of urine is also considered mandatory - general and detailed (with bacterial culture). It will allow you to establish the type of infectious agent and its sensitivity to various kinds of antibiotics.

A smear is made from the urethra, and ejaculate is cultured to identify pathological microorganisms and sensitivity to antibacterial drugs.

You should not be intimidated by such an impressive amount of research - if you wish, the entire complex can be completed in one day.

Treatment

They begin to treat pyospermia only after the specific causative agent of inflammation, the location of the inflammatory process, and an accurate diagnosis have been identified. Only after that, the doctor can select the necessary antibiotics (in tablets or injections), since in most cases there is still a need to use antibacterial drugs. If the "culprit" of the inflammation is identified, prescribing a targeted drug is considered preferable. If the true pathogen, despite the examination, remains unknown, the doctor recommends broad-spectrum antibiotics.

The task of treatment is to remove the inflammatory process, to eliminate the root cause. Only after that it will be possible to talk about the process of restoring sperm quality. Antibiotic treatment is combined with taking vitamin preparations. And at the end of the course of antibiotic therapy, medications are prescribed that improve the quality of sperm by affecting the processes of spermatogenesis.

Considering that a man's own immunity must also fight the inflammatory process, immunostimulating drugs are prescribed. Anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs may also be prescribed.

Despite the apparent laboriousness of treatment, the prognosis is favorable: after completion of therapy, after a while, the quality of semen is restored, and a man can easily become a happy father of healthy and strong babies.

Can folk remedies be used?

It is not recommended to treat pyospermia with folk remedies. Whatever folk healers and fans of alternative medicine write about the benefits of propolis and plantain, a purulent inflammatory process is not the case in which you need to experiment and waste precious time.

The consequences of advanced prostatitis can be very sad, and the treatment will then take much longer. It used to be thought that prostatitis is a disease of older men. Now andrologists and urologists are forced to state that the disease is significantly "younger" - today 20-year-old young men also turn to them with pyospermia due to advanced prostatitis.

It is categorically impossible to try to apply such popular advice as "steam the ailment in the bathhouse" or make a compress on the scrotum with propolis. Such advice can greatly complicate the course of the disease.

Recommendations

A man who is undergoing treatment for pyospermia is not recommended excessive physical exertion - for a while, it is worth leaving the gym, not lifting weights. But light jogging and walking in the fresh air will only benefit. During treatment, it is not recommended to take hot baths, go to the bath and sauna, solarium. In general, any overheating of the scrotum should be avoided: an increase in temperature increases the inflammatory process and has a fatal effect on the viability of sperm.

Neither during treatment nor in the recovery period should you wear tight underwear, tight trousers that disrupt the blood supply to the genitals and the pelvic area. You should also categorically refuse to take alcohol and drugs, reduce the amount of tobacco consumed, and it is better to quit smoking altogether - this will help to quickly restore the qualitative composition of semen.

A man's diet must necessarily include protein-rich foods: eggs, milk, dairy products, as well as meat, fish, liver, pistachios, fresh herbs. The right diet and the absence of stress is half the success on the path to happy fatherhood. During treatment and for several months after it, you should not engage in painting work, contact with paints, varnishes, pesticides, heavy metal salts: their effect is detrimental to sperm cells.

The spermogram should be repeated no earlier than 3 months after the end of treatment. By this time, young germ cells will mature, which have not been affected by pus.

Reviews

According to the reviews left on the Internet, we can conclude that the treatment of pyospermia is quite successful. However, you cannot call it cheap. Women complain that drugs to improve spermatogenesis, which are required for at least three months after they stop taking antibiotics, cost a pretty round amount. Therefore, the most "inventive" refuse to take "Spermactin" and buy separately "Carniton" and "L-acetylcarnitone". According to reviews, the savings are significant - more than three times.

Another difficulty is to persuade a man to follow all the recommendations, give up bad habits and take the prescribed medications on time. This requires serious efforts and vigilant supervision on the part of wives to ensure that all doctor's prescriptions are carried out in strict accordance.
