"Nazonex" during pregnancy: instructions for use

Women who are expecting a baby are not recommended to take any medications, however, with some diseases, treatment cannot be avoided. In such a situation, the doctor considers the question of the possibility of using a particular drug. This also applies to such a tool as "Nasonex". Only a specialist must decide whether it can be taken by pregnant women in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters, evaluating the appropriateness in each case separately. If such a drug was nevertheless prescribed to the expectant mother, she should carefully read the instructions for use, and also look at the review of reviews about this medication.

Features of the drug

"Nasonex" is a topical hormonal agent, which is released in the form of a spray. The solution is sprayed into the nasal cavity at a fixed dosage. It is sold in bottles of 60 and 120 single doses. The bottle is made of plastic and equipped with a dispensing device. To buy a drug, you must present a prescription from a doctor.

The drug itself is represented by a white suspension containing mometasone furoate as the main ingredient. It is a micronized substance in the form of a monohydrate, 50 mcg of which is contained in one spray dose. To prevent the medication from spoiling and being liquid, it contains inactive compounds such as polysorbate, glycerol, citric acid, dispersed cellulose, sodium citrate, purified water and benzalkonium chloride.

Separately in pharmacies you can find "Nasonex Alerji". This is a preparation in the form of a nasal spray, identical to the usual "Nasonex". It also works through mometasone, a single dose of 50 mcg. The inactive substances in the suspension are also the same.

Operating principle

Since the active substance of "Nasonex" belongs to the hormones-glucocorticoids, the drug has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. In this case, the spray exerts its effect only in the nasal cavity, since it is absorbed in a scanty amount. Thanks to its use, the release of mediators that activate and maintain inflammation is inhibited.

In addition, the drug inhibits the exchange of arachidonic acid, which also reduces the activity of allergic and inflammatory reactions. Since under the influence of mometasone the accumulation of leukocytes is prevented and the migration of macrophages is inhibited, the drug reduces infiltration and exudate in the nasopharynx. These effects make Nasonex effective in inflammatory and allergic diseases.

Since the spray additionally contains glycerin, the nasal cavity does not dry out during treatment, but, on the contrary, is well moisturized, which accelerates the regeneration of mucous membrane cells. The effect of the drug can usually be seen within 12 hours after its first use, but the lasting effect of the treatment is observed for 5-7 days. Addiction to "Nasonex" does not develop even with rather long-term treatment.

Is it allowed during pregnancy?

In the annotation to the medicine, it is noted that serious studies of the effect of "Nasonex" on the fetus have not been carried out, therefore, the use of the drug is permissible only as prescribed by the doctor, who must determine whether such treatment will be useful. If a woman is prescribed "Nasonex", then the baby after childbirth should be monitored in order to notice the suppression of the adrenal glands in time (such a negative effect is theoretically possible with the use of any glucocorticoids).

Despite the predominantly local action, they try to abandon the use of Nasonex in the early stages whenever possible. In the 1st trimester, the drug is prescribed only when it cannot be done without it. In 2-3 trimesters, the use of the spray is considered safe, so it can be used by pregnant women as directed by a doctor.

When is it prescribed for expectant mothers?

One of the most common indications for the use of Nasonex during pregnancy is allergic rhinitis. This disease is both seasonal and year-round. The drug is also included in the complex of treatment of sinusitis - both acute and chronic diseases, if it has worsened. Another reason to prescribe a spray to the expectant mother may be a polyp in the nasal cavity.

Contraindications

Treatment with Nasonex is prohibited for patients who have hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the spray. The drug is also not used if the mucous membrane is injured (in such cases, the agent can be used only after complete healing). If the expectant mother has any fungal or bacterial infections, Nasonex is used with caution. Pregnant women who have a serious viral infection, for example, caused by the herpes virus, also require increased attention.

Side effects

During treatment with the spray, headaches, sneezing attacks or nosebleeds may occur. Sometimes the drug irritates the mucous membrane, provoking a burning sensation and the appearance of erosion. In very rare cases, the spray causes bronchospasm, problems with taste or smell, allergic reactions, perforation of the nasal septum, and increased intraocular pressure.

Instructions for use

Before using the spray for the first time, you must press the dispenser several times until splashes appear. The same manipulation is required if Nasonex has not been used for the last 14 days or longer. After inserting the tip of the nozzle into the nostril and tilting your head slightly, you need to press the dispenser the required number of times, and then in the same way inject the medication into the other nostril.

It is recommended to shake the bottle before each spraying of the suspension so that a homogeneous agent gets on the mucous membrane.

For long-term treatment, the dispensing tip should be cleaned regularly by rinsing the cap and tip with warm, clean water.

The dosage of the medicine is determined by the doctor, because it depends on the disease and the severity of the symptoms. For instance, with allergic rhinitis the agent is prescribed to inject two doses once a day, and as the symptoms subside, they switch to one injection per day (1 dose in each nostril). If there is no therapeutic effect, the specialist can increase the single dosage of Nasonex to 4 doses per day.

For the treatment of sinusitis the drug is often prescribed twice, 2 doses in each nasal passage. Depending on the response to therapy, the dosage is adjusted - either it increases if the symptoms do not subside, or decreases when the disease begins to recede. The duration of use is selected individually.

Reviews

Women who were prescribed "Nasonex" while waiting for a baby respond mostly positively about this medicine. According to them, it is an effective and safe remedy that quickly relieves the condition of allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Among its disadvantages, only the high cost of the spray is usually indicated.

Analogs

If it becomes necessary to replace “Nasonex” with a drug with the same active substance, the doctor will prescribe “Dezrinit” or “Nosefrin”. Such drugs are also produced in the form of a metered-dose spray, the basis of which is mometasone. They are used for the same indications and can be prescribed to pregnant women if necessary. Self-administration of such medications is prohibited.
