Komarovsky Evgeny Olegovich: biography and reasons for the popularity of the pediatrician

Children's doctor Evgeny Komarovsky is the favorite of hundreds of thousands of modern mothers. Only he knows how to convey all the necessary information about the treatment of children and the prevention of diseases to parents who are far from medicine so simply and clearly. He is appreciated for his amazingly subtle sense of humor, for his great love for children.

What is the secret of the popularity of the famous doctor, we will tell in this material.

About childhood

The biography of Evgeny Olegovich Komarovsky in many sources is set out rather sparingly - he was born, studied, worked. In fact, and he himself is very fond of talking about it, his life has been quite interesting since childhood. He was born into a family of engineers in Kharkov on October 15, 1960. In 2018, Evgeny Olegovich will celebrate his 58th birthday.

Zhenya's parents worked at a turbine plant, and at first glance his childhood was not much different from the childhood of millions of Soviet schoolchildren - pioneers, demonstrations, scrap metal collection. Before working as an engineer at the plant, Evgenia's mother received her first education in the field of culture and worked as a librarian. Due to this, in the standard apartment of the Komarovskys, there was a rather large library that was completely non-standard for that time. The boy's passion for reading woke up early. When his parents forbade him to read, he hid under the covers with a flashlight and continued to study another adventure novel or story.

When Zhenya was 10 years old, his younger sister was born, and this event indirectly determined his future profession.

For some reason, the boy was so afraid for the baby, so worried that nothing would happen to her, that he constantly and completely voluntarily helped his mother take care of the baby.

The sister was ill, recovered, all this happened with the direct participation of the older brother, who knew how to “feed” the hated mixture to the sister and put the jars. Therefore, by the time I graduated from school, there were no questions about choosing a profession.

About the profession

Eugene graduated from the most ordinary school, secondary. It was rather difficult to enter a medical institute at the end of the 70s - the profession was prestigious, noble, there were many who wanted to wear a white coat, and there were few places in an educational institution. Considering that there were no relatives-doctors in Komarovsky's family, there was nowhere to wait for patronage. But in the summer of 1977 at the Kharkov Medical Institute, which was famous throughout the USSR, the rector unexpectedly changed. The old, according to rumors, was fired for the fact that the facts of bribery were revealed in the selection committee.

With great hope for justice, during the exams, Evgeny went to take the entrance tests. He received two A's and two A's and was admitted to the pediatric faculty. Happiness knew no bounds.

Evgeny Olegovich does not tell much about the student body, he refers to the fact that he was very tired in order to remember some bright moments, since study was not easy. Relations with teachers, who did not know how to explain the essence of their subject in an accessible language, but only read lectures on books "word for word" were especially difficult. By the second year of study, the attitude towards learning began to change - real enthusiasts appeared in Yevgeny's life - enthusiastic doctors and nurses who loved the profession, patients and knew how to "infect" others with their ideas.

So, under the patronage of friends, Evgeny Komarovsky, a second year student, ended up in a local hospital. He worked for free. He just came every day after class to help nurses, doctors, and at the same time received such an invaluable practice for a medical student.

In his third year, he already worked for a small, but his own salary - as a nurse in the intensive care unit of a children's hospital, and then in the intensive care unit of the Institute of Emergency Surgery.

More than once Evgeny Komarovsky admitted that it was the resuscitation that “made him a man” - there he learned to value life, rejoice at every little success, and understand what the mistake of a doctor and a patient really is.

The institute years were left behind and with a diploma of higher education, Yevgeny Komarovsky in 1983 came to the intensive care unit of the Kharkov Regional Infectious Children's Hospital. Until 1991, he worked as an ordinary doctor, and then received the first promotion in his life - he became the head of the intensive care unit.

In 1996, Komarovsky became a candidate of medical sciences. In 2000, the reserve of patience in the confrontation with the state health care system ran out, and Komarovsky left the hospital. For some time he gave consultations in a private medical center, and then opened his own clinic "Clinic".

About television

Now Komarovsky proudly bears the title of "The most handsome man in Ukraine", his mustache and smile are recognized not only by the parents of Ukraine, but also from other countries. And the first appearance on television happened quite by accident. One of the Kharkov TV channels asked the doctor for an interview about diphtheria. It happened in 1992, and it was this year that a real epidemic of this infectious disease raged in Ukraine.

Usually a doctor in front of a camera is a nightmare of any journalist and director, because people who treat well are most often afraid of cameras and are very embarrassed, even to the point of being completely unable to express their thoughts in human language. Komarovsky turned out to be the complete opposite, and very soon he was often invited to comment on certain issues of childhood morbidity or the prevention of infectious diseases.

When Evgeny Olegovich began to work independently in his own clinic, a wealth of material for discussion began to accumulate. Parents often asked the same questions, they were interested in the same problems. Komarovsky decided to tell everyone at once everything that needs to know about raising healthy babies from the TV screen, since both communications in the media and the experience of television performances had already accumulated by that time. So in 2010, the program "School of Doctor Komarovsky" was launched on the Inter channel.

You can see an example of the transfer of the School of Doctor Komarovsky below.

Since 2017, Komarovsky has also been working on radio - he runs the Mixture Show project on Russian Radio. Since 2018, Evgeny Komarovsky has accepted an offer to become a TV presenter on the children's channel Karusel. He runs the column "Ask Doctor Komarovsky", which is part of the program "Navigator".

Evgeny Olegovich considers his success on television to be quite natural and understandable - young mothers, grandmothers and all their sympathizers are more inclined to believe the “authoritative mustachioed man from the TV” than a doctor of the highest category who will tell them something in the office of a clinic or hospital. Therefore, according to Komarovsky, television is an excellent, affordable way to convey important information to those who need it - to their parents.

Books

Evgeny Komarovsky did not study writing, the children's experience of uncontrollable reading of everything that could be reached in mother's home library affected. Therefore, when in the early 90s there was a desire to transfer to paper his, by that time already quite impressive experience as a doctor, there were no special problems with the choice of words and stylistics - well-read people, as a rule, are perfectly able to express their thoughts, including in the text.

The first work was the monograph "Viral croup in children". The monograph was written not for respectable scientific circles, but more for patients and numerous friends. Therefore, the doctor allowed himself to choose a somewhat unofficial tone of the monograph, somewhere to laugh, somewhere to feel sad with the readers. But the main thing he reported - informed about viral croup and ways to prevent it. It was unusual and new, and there were no problems with the publication. The monograph was published. By the way, three years later, the work was appreciated in professional circles, and Komarovsky was awarded the degree of candidate of medical sciences.

From that moment on, the doctor writes almost constantly - books, articles, notes, Internet publications. The first truly popular and beloved by the masses was the book "The Beginning of Your Child's Life" which came out in 1996.

In 2000, the sequel to the first book, "Child's health and common sense of his relatives", was published. Since then, this book has been constantly reprinted, supplemented, corrected, because new experience appears, new letters from readers and new situations that must be conveyed to the common sense of adults who are raising babies.

So, at the time of the first edition, disposable diapers were almost not available. And now every second question from parents about caring for a newborn concerns them - those very "diapers". New medicines, cosmetics for children, food and formula have appeared. That is why the project “Child's Health and Common Sense of His Relatives” has no end in sight - as new information accumulates, a new edition is published. There have already been 15 reprints of the project.

Komarovsky intends to continue writing. He himself claims that he is simply obliged to do this, because his works reach someone, and these people are reconsidering their attitude to caring for a baby. Modern medical science is far from reality, says Evgeny Olegovich. More and more illiterate doctors, more and more parents who blindly trust these illiterate doctors, respectively, more and more sick children.

The overwhelming number of babies, according to the deep conviction of Evgeny Komarovsky, are born completely healthy. Improper care, greenhouse conditions, strange standards make them sick providing medical care in maternity hospitals, in children's clinics, just a manic passion of parents and pediatricians to prescribe pills, mixtures, syrups and injections to a poor child for any occasion.

Continuing to write, Komarovsky tries to convey to his parents (and, if he’s lucky, to his fellow pediatricians) that children's health should not be crippled, but supported. And how to do this, he tells in his books and articles.

Over the past 20 years, Evgeny Komarovsky has received more than three hundred thousand letters from his readers from 89 countries of the world. Someone agrees with the doctor and thanks him for the practical advice that helped the child, someone disputes the principles and opinions of Komarovsky, and this is also completely normal and natural. In general, something amazing is happening with the letters, says Komarovsky - among the total number of requests, 2.5 thousand messages were sent by doctors, 50 letters were written by eminent professors, honored and important figures of medical sciences. At the same time, not a single letter was ever written by health officials! Evgeny Olegovich did not work well with officials.

Doctors are afraid of responsibility, officials, punishment, therefore such a phenomenon as overdiagnosis has become widespread. And it is not doctors or officials who are responsible for the child's health, but parents. It is the family that is the first front line that guards the child's health.

To take care of his health, the parents must have at least basic knowledge of how to do it. Modern medicine does not provide for such "education" for mums and dads. This was undertaken by Evgeny Komarovsky, who believes that its main task is not even to treat babies, but to teach their relatives how to raise a child correctly so that there are no reasons for treatment, that is, healthy, strong and happy.

Basic principles of the doctor

Many mothers note that all of Yevgeny Komarovsky's books are written with such a sparkling sense of humor that women involuntarily begin to feel a surge of optimism even in situations that, at first glance, do not inspire optimism at all.

Among parents on thematic forums, there is even such a thing as "To live according to Komarovsky." What does this mean, what are the basic principles of the famous pediatrician parents take note of?

The best doctor is the child's own immunity

This is the main principle. It is based on Komarovsky's conviction that almost all children are healthy from birth. Nature itself made sure that their immunity could cope with viruses, bacteria, and common childhood illnesses. Attempts by parents to stuff a child with pills is a hindrance to immunity. Medications are needed, but only in extreme situations. In 90% of cases of childhood diseases, it is enough to create conditions under which the immune system can quickly mobilize and begin to fight the infection.

At the same time, there should be a minimum amount of drugs and each drug must be justified. Most pediatricians, on the other hand, prescribe 6-7 medications for a child with ARVI (“for the virus, for fever, for cough, for a runny nose, for headaches, for insomnia and for diarrhea” simultaneously). The doctor fears for unforeseen complications, he does not want to take responsibility without prescribing such a list of drugs. Parents do not want to take responsibility and follow the recommendations.

As a result, the pill-fed baby begins to get sick with enviable regularity, since his own immunity is diligently destroyed and oppressed by caring and irresponsible adults.

The best healers are air, water, the right environment

Komarovsky argues that the immune system will work better only when the child spends enough time outdoors, drinks enough liquid, and the environment in his house or in the kindergarten group meets the requirements of his body. The air temperature for the baby's health in the room should be maintained at a level of 18-21 degrees above 0, and the air humidity should be in the range of 50-70%.

However, the sanitary standards do not allow the teacher in the kindergarten to open the window in winter to ventilate the room, and the temperature in the group, according to the standards drawn up by officials, should not fall below 25 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is not surprising that in seasons of mass morbidity, children begin to get sick with viral infections one after another.

If, at the same time, at home, the mother puts an additional heater and saves on buying a humidifier, then the sick person is likely to receive complications in the form of bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngitis, tonsillitis and other unpleasant diagnoses.

It is necessary to temper the child "in Komarovsky style" from the first days after discharge from the hospital, not to be afraid to make cool baths for him (27-30 degrees), arrange sun and air baths, do gymnastics.

Allergy is not a disease, but a reaction to environmental disturbances

Komarovsky recommends that parents take care not of buying hypoallergenic foods and allergy medications for their child, but that the baby does not have a conflict with the environment from an early age. Daily wet cleaning, the absence of dusty books in the child's room, and the presence of a cat or dog (or both) in the house increases the chances that the child will not have any allergies. The more it is protected from wool, blooming pollen, the more "greenhouse" the child grows. And every new substance in the world around him is capable of causing him an allergy.

Most children outgrow the allergy, that is, with age, the body's inadequate response to the allergen disappears without a trace. Therefore, making a problem out of allergies and starting to treat it with aggressive medicines is a wrong path.

The child cannot be the main one in the family

In the upbringing of the baby, from the establishment of the daily regimen after discharge from the hospital and ending with his whims at preschool age, Komarovsky's main rule is the priority rule - the child cannot command a flock, but he must immediately learn to adapt to the interests and laws of this flock, so that in it survive successfully. Therefore, Evgeny Olegovich, unlike many foreign pediatricians who advise to fulfill all the desires of a baby or preschooler, argues that the child should live according to the regime established by adults, and not vice versa.

Then, babies do not have problems with a night's sleep, just as tantrums and uncontrollable antics do not arise in preschoolers.

Ultimately, the parents' refusal to adjust their lives to the child's “wishes” is beneficial to him both from the point of view of medicine and from the point of view of pedagogy.

The child should not be overfed

This is a very common mistake of parents and grandmothers - to feed the child with all his might at any opportunity. If the baby does not eat or begins to eat selectively, is capricious, adults begin to look for the reasons for this behavior, turn to doctors and try to treat. You don't need to do anything like that - the child should eat when he is hungry. At the same time, you should not panic if he did not eat now - he will eat when he wants.

Attempts to feed a child with strength during an illness deserve special attention. Fasting during these periods will only benefit - the body will have more strength to fight the disease, because the body will not spend energy on digesting food.

The child needs to be given the opportunity to be closer to nature

This means that in summer the child should run barefoot in the country or in the village with his grandmother, swim in open reservoirs, get dirty in mud and sand and drink water from a well. In winter, the child must play snowballs, sled and ski, and at home he can and should stomp barefoot throughout the year. Not all parents can afford to give up woolen socks carefully knitted by a grandmother, or obligatory slippers.

But those who want to see a child healthy and strong, without flat feet and problems with posture, should try - the result has already been tested by thousands of children.

The father must participate in the child's life not only financially

Komarovsky argues that the development of the country is possible only when fathers cease to be exclusively interested in news, oil, money and sports events and become interested in their own children. Dad should be aware of what the child eats and drinks, where and how much he walks, what problems he has in kindergarten or school. Mom should inform Dad about all this.

Together, the parents are the crucial link in the child's decision-making chain. Relatives, friends and neighbors with their advice should be ignored. Only mom, dad and pediatrician are able to decide how to treat and what to do.

Every child is a person, you cannot compare him with others

Yevgeny Komarovsky regularly appeals to mothers and grandmothers with a request to stop comparing their child with neighboring children, with certain norms and standards of development, which they read about on the Internet or which the doctor tells them about in the clinic. Each baby develops according to its own individual scenario, at its own time, at its own pace.

Do not consider this a deviation, pathology or lag. It's just that everything has its time.

Vaccinations are a blessing

Vaccination is necessary for the child. And that's it. Vaccinations can save a child's life from the most dangerous human diseases.

About family and hobbies

Evgeny Komarovsky married a student of the same university where he studied himself. At that time he was a 4th year student. His chosen one was the pretty girl Ekaterina, a classmate who, after graduation, became a children's ophthalmologist. In 1982, Komarovsky's firstborn son Dima was born, and six years later, in 1988, his second son, Andrei, was born. In 2013, both adult sons simultaneously made their father a grandfather - the grandson and granddaughter of Yevgeny Olegovich were born. Twice the grandfather claims that he is not averse to becoming a grandfather for the third and fourth time.

There are always many guests in Komarovsky's house. Friends come, grandchildren and sons come, neighbors come running in, so you rarely have to stay alone with your wife. On his personal plot, Evgeny Olegovich grows birches and oaks, and spruce. He has a cat and a dog.

Yevgeny Komarovsky's real passion is fishing. He is happy to devote all his free time to her. Because of the passion for fishing, a related hobby appeared - SUVs.

Evgeny Komarovsky loves to travel, but not to noisy tourist countries, but away from people and closer to unspoiled nature. He gladly takes pictures and videos of all his adventures, generously shares his impressions and pictures with his subscribers on social networks. Reading also continues to be one of his favorite things to do in his life.
