Candles "Panadol" for children: instructions for use

Antipyretics are some of the most common and essential medicines in the medicine cabinet for families with young children. Among them, Children's Panadol, which is also called Panadol Baby, is in great demand. One form of this medication is rectal suppositories. When are they prescribed to children, in what dosage are they used and what analogs are they replaced?

Release form

Panadol Baby candles have a conical shape, a homogeneous structure and an almost white color. Normally, such suppositories do not have any foreign matter or physical defects.

They are packed in strips of 5 and 10 pieces, and one pack contains from 5 to 20 candles.

Composition

The active ingredient of Panadol children's suppositories is paracetamol. Its amount in one suppository is 125 mg or 250 mg.

In addition to this component, the drug also contains solid fat. There are no other ingredients and chemical additives in this Panadol form.

Operating principle

Children's Panadol refers to non-steroidal drugs that have a pronounced analgesic and antipyretic effect. Such effects from the use of suppositories are associated with the ability of paracetamol influence cyclooxygenase.

As a result of the inhibition of such an enzyme in the central nervous system, the medication acts on the centers that regulate body temperature and pain perception. At the same time, Panadol does not act on water-salt metabolism and the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract.

The absorption of the active ingredient of the drug is quite fast and almost complete. The beginning of the action of the candles is celebrated after 1.5-2 hours, and the duration of the antipyretic effect of such Panadol is up to 6 hours.

Metabolic changes of the drug occur mainly in the liver cells, and the excretion of processed paracetamol is provided by the kidneys (within a day after application, approximately 90% of the dose passes into the urine).

Indications

Children's Panadol in candles is in demand:

  • as a symptomatic remedy for high body temperature caused by an infection (flu, measles, chickenpox, mumps, scarlet fever, intestinal infection, etc.) or vaccination;
  • as a pain reliever for sore throat, teething pain, ear pain, trauma, and so on.

From what age is it used in children?

Panadol in candles is not prescribed until 6 months of age. If an antipyretic drug is required for babies who are not yet six months old, use a suspension, since it is allowed from 3 months, or an analogue with a lower paracetamol content is chosen.

Since suppositories are available in two dosages, each of them has your age range, as well as restrictions on the patient's weight:

  • suppositories containing 125 mg are prescribed at the age of 6-30 months for children weighing 8-12.5 kg;
  • suppositories with 250 mg of paracetamol are used in children 3-6 years old, whose weight is 13-20 kg.

For a child over six years old or if a small patient weighs over 20 kg, a higher single dose is required, therefore the use of suppositories in such children is inappropriate. They are given either a suspension (Children's Panadol) or a tablet form (Panadol).

Contraindications

The drug is not prescribed for children:

  • with hypersensitivity to paracetamol;
  • with blood diseases;
  • with severe renal impairment;
  • with serious liver pathologies;

  • with a lack of glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase;
  • with bleeding from the rectum;
  • with inflammation of the rectum.

In very rare cases, Panadol in candles provokes:

  • rashes on the skin;

  • nausea;
  • hives;
  • disruption of the liver;
  • angioedema;

If an overdose has occurred, the child should be immediately shown to the pediatrician, even if the baby is in good condition.

Drug interaction

If the child is given any other drugs, then before using Panadol, it is imperative to clarify their compatibility, since suppositories are not advised to be combined with treatment with rifampicin, barbiturates, anticonvulsants, domperidone, anticoagulants and many other medicines. Reviews

There are many good reviews about the use of Children's Panadol in candles for fever or pain in children. According to mothers, such a drug is convenient to use in babies in the first years of life, especially if the child is prone to vomiting.

Also, most parents note among the main advantages of Panadol his safety in childhood. They confirm that side reactions to such suppositories are extremely rare, and the drug is well tolerated.

The disadvantages of the drug include a rather late onset of action, because sometimes it takes 2-3 hours to get an antipyretic effect or relieve pain. Because of this, moms often prefer ibuprofen preparations or combine Panadol with such medications (given in turn), if such an alternation was prescribed by a doctor.

The cost of suppositories is said to be affordable.

Analogs

Other paracetamol preparations, which are produced in the form of suppositories, can replace Panadol Baby:

  • Cefekon D. Since the dose of paracetamol in such suppositories is lower than in Panadol (only 50 mg per 1 suppository), they are allowed to be put from 1 month.
  • Efferalgan. These suppositories are available in three different dosages. The drug with 80 mg of paracetamol is used in children 3-5 months old, suppositories of 150 mg of the active ingredient are prescribed for patients from 6 months to 3 years, and suppositories with 300 mg of paracetamol are indicated for small patients aged 3 to 10 years.
  • Paracetamol. Such suppositories are produced in a dosage of 50, 100, 250 and 500 mg, which allows you to choose the right medicine for a child of any age. In the smallest dose, the medication is prescribed from 1 month.

In addition, instead of Panadol and other drugs containing paracetamol, the doctor may prescribe suppositories with analgesic and antipyretic effects based on ibuprofen, for example, Nurofen or Ibuprofen drugs.

Such medicines contain ibuprofen at a dosage of 60 mg in one suppository. These drugs are used in children weighing more than 6 kg at the age of 3 months and older.

One of their main advantages is called a faster action than Panadol's, since it begins within 20-30 minutes after the suppository has entered the rectum. In addition, the antipyretic effect of Ibuprofen or Nurofen in suppositories lasts up to 8 hours.

Even babies older than three months at a high temperature can be put candles Analgin. Their action is provided by metamizole sodium, but in childhood such a remedy is used with increased caution.

Analgin in candles is often used in the absence of safer options at hand, which are considered paracetamol and ibuprofen preparations.

If the child has severe pain or an active inflammatory process, it is better to replace Panadol with suppositories Voltarenwhich contain 25 mg of sodium diclofenac. Such suppositories are allowed at any age, but only as directed by a doctor. You cannot use them without the doctor's control.
