Absorbent diapers: how to choose and when are they needed?

The life of a modern person is simplified by a multitude of gadgets and devices, since the level of modern technologies has made it possible to make them of high quality and practical. Changes took place both globally and at the household level, and they affected even the most ordinary things, replacing them with more comfortable and practical ones.

Absorbent diapers for babies are an integral part of every mother's everyday life. What it is, what is the scope of their application and how to choose quality products, read our article.

What are they for?

Moisture-absorbing diapers are widely in demand in the care of newborns and babies up to 3-4 years old. Their purpose is to protect the changing table, crib, baby stroller and all other surfaces from getting wet.

Absorbent diapers are made of a special material that easily absorbs moisture and is able to retain it for a long time. It should be noted that these products are not suitable for swaddling. They can only be used to cover the surface on which the baby will be placed.

The use of these diapers is actually unlimited. With their help, it will be convenient for a young mother to carry out the child's toilet, take care of the baby's skin, and treat wounds on the navel.

Now sleep without diapers on an absorbable diaper will be restful. Children can also take air baths on it.

It is not uncommon for mothers to cover the bed during feedings to protect against regurgitation or milk drips. Such diapers will always come in handy when visiting a doctor - there will be something to set a cold table in the doctor's office.

The surface of the moisture-absorbing diapers is pleasant to the touch, it does not irritate the delicate baby skin and does not cause allergies. Some manufacturers offer products impregnated with antibacterial agents.

Absorbable nappies make it easier and more comfortable to care for newborns. They are always at hand while changing, changing diapers or after bathing.

But the peak of the demand for diapers is the time when the baby is just learning to go to the potty. In addition, these products will be simply irreplaceable during sleep. Children under three years old often do not control urination during sleep, and an absorbent diaper will save the child's sleep and make the bed dry and clean.

Kinds

There are two types of modern moisture-absorbing products: disposable and reusable, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses in operation.

Disposable

Disposable absorbent diapers are available in various sizes. Almost all modern products have good durability and are practical to use.

The diapers are based on an opaque material (not always fabric) with a smooth, soft texture, which perfectly absorbs and distributes moisture throughout the entire product. They cannot be reused, washed or ironed.

Standard diapers can be 40 by 60, 60 by 60, 60 by 90. Even the smallest products can greatly facilitate baby care. But large ones are often in demand among expectant mothers. Diapers are often taken with them to the hospital: they will be needed for examinations and in the delivery room, and will also protect the bed from leaking onto the mattress.

The composition of disposable products may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, the most popular ones have five layers of protection:

  1. Upper. Made of antiseptic and hydrophilic material.
  2. Paper. Promotes maximum absorbency.
  3. Cellulosic. It is in this layer that most of the incoming fluid remains. Most modern manufacturers make it on the basis of superabsorbent, which increases in proportions when moisture enters.
  4. Paper. The second layer is duplicated for more reliable liquid absorption.
  5. Film. The layer is made of a special textured film that does not allow moisture to pass through. At the edges, the diaper is protected by restraints - an additional barrier that protects against leakage.

Of course, the main component of an absorbent diaper is superabsorbent. Despite the fact that it is a synthetic filler, it is absolutely harmless to newborn babies, does not cause allergies and does not emit odor and toxic substances. The upper material is often made from cotton with added polymers.

Disposable products have significant advantages:

  • fast absorption;
  • convenience and practicality in operation;
  • affordable price.

But there is also a significant drawback: in a room with a high temperature, diapers quickly heat up, so the baby will not be very pleasant to be on them.

Reusable absorbent

These products are a terry, compacted diaper with a pleasant surface. It is clear from the name of the products that they can be reused. It should be added that reusable diapers can be washed and even taking into account multiple washing, their service life is quite long.

As a rule, the top layer, like disposable ones, is treated with an antibacterial impregnation to avoid irritation of baby's skin. Some manufacturers include a dust mite protection layer in their diapers.

Reusable absorbent diapers are available in different sizes. The most important thing is that you do not need to underlay an oilcloth under them, since the protective film layer reliably retains moisture inside the product.

There are two types of reusable absorbent diapers: waterproof and absorbent. Waterproof products usually include four layers:

  • Cotton with a porous terry surface.
  • Non-woven fabric with an absorbent that absorbs moisture.
  • Waterproof microporous membrane that acts as an additional barrier to liquid flow. The texture of the membrane is made in such a way that air can circulate freely inside the product.
  • Anti-leakage film.

Waterproof diapers consist of only 2 layers: an upper terry cloth and a lower microporous membrane.

They do not allow moisture to pass inside - the liquid remains on the surface, slightly wetting the upper textile layer. In fact, this is a comfortable alternative to the usual pharmacy rubber oilcloths. Of course, such products will cost much more than ordinary oilcloths.

But at the same time they are soft, not cold and pleasant to the touch. Lying on it, the child will not feel discomfort.

Judging by the feedback from mothers, after repeated washing, the top layer of such diapers softens and the moisture is absorbed more strongly. They are best used for short-term air baths, swaddling or massage.

It is worth noting that modern manufacturers offer a wide range of absorbent products in completely different sizes and colors. On sale you can find pink, blue, white, blue diapers.

Some products are equipped with an elastic band for greater ease of use. Of course, the cost of such diapers with an elastic band is somewhat different from ordinary products, but thanks to their more comfortable use, they fully pay off.

How to choose?

Before purchasing moisture-absorbing diapers, you should familiarize yourself with all the advantages and disadvantages of the products. Usually, the reviews of friends and acquaintances who have already tested the product play an important role in the selection. But when choosing which manufacturer to give preference to, it is better to rely on your own conclusions. You should focus on how the baby reacts to the diaper: is it comfortable, comfortable, not hot.

Consider also the absorbency indicated on the label. And, of course, you need to choose a diaper based on how it will be used. Depending on this, diapers of appropriate sizes are purchased.

Today, products of 3 sizes are presented on the domestic market:

  • 40*60;
  • 60*60;
  • 90*60.

The first number is the width of the diaper, the second is the length. Small items are suitable for short-term use, for example, for changing diapers. But for longer procedures, it is better to give preference to larger products. For example, to use a diaper in a baby carriage, it is better to buy a product 90 * 60 cm.

As for the level of absorbency of the diaper, this factor is influenced by the density of the absorbed ball and the quality of the absorbent.

Different diapers have different absorbency:

  • diapers 40x60 on average absorb about 350-650 ml, and maximum can absorb up to 750 ml;
  • 60x60 diapers absorb on average 250-1050 ml, maximum up to 1100-2100 ml;
  • diapers 60x90 on average absorb up to 650-1525 ml, maximum - up to 1500-1900 ml.

As you can see, the larger the size of the product, the higher the level of moisture absorption.

However, using disposable or reusable diapers, you need to monitor their condition, not leading to a deplorable state. Otherwise, it can lead to irritation, redness and itching of the baby's skin.
