Psychosomatics of the common cold and nose problems in children and adults

Free breathing is the key to well-being. At the same time, a runny nose can prevent a person from sleeping normally, a headache appears, his body can experience oxygen starvation if nasal breathing is difficult. Unfortunately, adults do not always attach the proper importance to a cold. And in vain, because very often the appearance of such an unpleasant symptom can be an important life clue.

It is worth considering the psychosomatic causes of nose problems, how to treat a child and an adult.

General information

The nose is an organ that performs very important functions. It not only beautifies our face, but also provides our breath. Before the air enters the lungs, it must be sufficiently warm, humidified, and disinfected. Our nose takes the most active part in all this. It provides a normal temperature for the air flowing into the lungs, plays the role of a filter, since it is in the nose that dust and microbes settle - they are captured by mucous membranes and villi.

If there was no nose, we spoke in a completely different way than we do now, because it acts as a resonator that gives the voice sonority, timbre.

With the help of the nose, or rather, the receptors located in it, a person can receive important information for existence - about smells. Without the sense of smell, a person would hardly be able to survive in the ancient world, since smells are important information. for the hunter. Today, without the sense of smell, there would be no tastes, perfumery and culinary delights, because all the food seemed to be about the same.

Diseases of the nose are widespread in adults and children.

Talking about them from a psychosomatic point of view, we will cover several of the most common pathologies.

  • Rhinitis (runny nose) Is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa. It is caused by microbes, viruses, and may be the result of allergies. Rhinitis is often a symptom of other diseases. It occurs with equal frequency in adults and children. Vasomotor rhinitis and chronic rhinitis are especially difficult to treat.
  • Epitaxis (epistaxis) more common in children than adults. It can be rare or chronic. Sometimes bleeding occurs outward (anterior epitaxis) and sometimes through the esophagus into the stomach (posterior epitaxis).
  • Sinusitis Is an inflammatory process in the sinuses of the nose. It is most often a complication of rhinitis. This group of diseases includes sinusitis, ethmoiditis, sphenoiditis, frontal sinusitis.

Common complaints include nasal injuries, curvature of the nasal septum. Foreign bodies are often found in a child's nose, and the nose can be burned or frostbitten, polyps, an abscess or a boil can appear in the nose.

With almost all problems with the nose, a person's sense of smell decreases or disappears, there is a feeling of nasal congestion, the release of nasal mucus (sometimes with pus, blood), there are complaints of fatigue, headache.

A person with a runny nose is rarely cheerful and contented - usually a violation of nasal breathing leads to depression, bad mood, lethargy.

Psychosomatic causes

Psychosomatic medicine considers any pathology or symptom in terms of the relationship between mental state and physiological changes. The nervous system and human psyche control all processes, including the mechanisms of development of diseases.

Particular attention should be paid to explanations on psychosomatics for adults and children who often suffer from a runny nose. Often, doctors do not find objective reasons for nasal symptoms and talk about hypothermia or possible inhalation of dusty air. But in all cases when there are no compelling reasons for nasal congestion, but there is a runny nose - first of all, you need to consider the psychosomatic causes of rhinitis.

The psychosomatic meaning of the nose is very similar to its physiological purpose: we need this organ in order to breathe air (life), receive from the outside world, transform (warm, cleanse) and transmit further - to the lungs. Again, the nose is needed to exhale, that is, to give off the carbon dioxide that has accumulated in the body. From a psychosomatic point of view, nose problems are a violation of the exchange of information with the outside world. Nasal congestion and the inability to smell is just a detail (a person stops receiving information about smells from the world), which indicates a violation of contact.

If snot flows, the person gives more than he takes from the world, which again confirms the violation of interaction.

People who often have a stuffy nose are not in the mood for full contact with the outside world. They are either afraid to live the way they want, the way they dream, or they are wary of the world, waiting for a catch and everywhere they see a threat to their security. Psychoanalysts have noticed that they are alien to the "nuances" of the world (smells) - they try to avoid both troubles and great joy.

Ideally, in the opinion of a person with a chronic rhinitis, one must live "smoothly", without suffering and dizzying ups. In the soul of a person with nasal breathing problems, bold feelings and emotions are born from time to time, ideas appear to conquer mountains, swim across the sea, finally take and slam the door in the face of a bored boss at work, but they drive such thoughts away. Bold ideas, tightly driven into the subconscious, are transformed over time into the very invisible obstacle that causes swelling of the nasal passages and respiratory failure.

Neurolinguists have long drawn attention to the fact that people who for years suffer from a cold that occurs regularly or does not pass at all, that does not give in to any treatment, habitually use in their speech such phrases as: "this case smells bad", I can't stand (something or someone) "," don't breathe in my direction. "

  • If a person's emotional background is relatively even, based on the suppression of their emotions, the desire to live calmly, quietly and "evenly", but usually develops chronic rhinitis.
  • If there is irritation in the gamut of emotions ("I can't stand the spirit"), then inflammatory diseases of the nose.
  • If a person experiences anger towards the outside world, towards people or a specific person who, in his opinion, prevents him from living "evenly", a purulent disease develops, for example, sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, abscess, furunculosis.
  • A person who grossly violated the laws of the world around him and refused to accept positive and important information, breathe life in full breast where it was necessary, may face sudden injury to the nose... For example, a person persistently refuses to help sick children, denying their suffering - when denial reaches its peak, he may fall on the uncleaned stairs in the stairwell and break his nose or meet bullies and receive a traumatic blow to the face.
  • A person who does not know how to rejoice, strives to spoil the joy of others, may also suddenly receive nose injury, and there will be nothing strange in this: trauma is a warning that the time has come to change your worldview, to give an opportunity for joy and grief to enter, handle and leave calmly.
  • If contact with the world cannot be established, development is possible chronic severe diseases, which generally block the ability to breathe through the nose, smell.

Why isn't the child breathing through his nose?

In childhood, a runny nose often occurs, moreover, at certain periods of life that are decisive for the child. I went to kindergarten - a runny nose, went to first grade - a stuffy nose, important competitions on the nose - a runny nose, the family moves to a new place of residence - rhinitis.

Psychologists say that the adaptive abilities of children are lower than that of adults, so nasal congestion in childhood without any additional symptoms (bleeding, snot, cough, fever, and so on) often indicates that the child has certain difficulties with adaptation to new conditions, new team, new rules.

Any discomfort in relation to the new environmental conditions of the world can cause nasal congestion.

Most children outgrow this psychosomatic congestion by the age of 15-16, but for some it persists for life.

As soon as a person leaves the habitual for the new, the unusual, a runny nose starts. For example, I came on vacation in a new climate, returned from vacation to work (especially from a long vacation, for example, maternity leave), changed my place of work, residence - nasal congestion immediately arises. Such rhinitis goes away on its own, as you adapt. If it is delayed, the reason should be looked for in something else.

In children, a lingering rhinitis that is not associated with adaptation usually occurs as a defense mechanism against someone who prevents them from taking life easily and naturally... This happens in families where parents are used to dramatizing and complicating everything. They teach children that life is a very difficult thing, that nothing can be achieved without labor, that a walk is impossible until the lessons are done. Perfectionist parents and pedants deprive a child of the joy of communicating with the world.

If a child is forbidden to cry (which is quite common), then the baby may develop sinusitis, in psychosomatics it is considered a disease of squeezed and restrained tears.

Psychologists pay attention to one more pattern - in families, where children rarely see their parents, do not play with them, do not spend weekends together, where there is a deficit of love and attention, children suffer from nose problems more often than in families where the parents have time for the child. There is one more parental extreme - overprotection.

If the grandmother and mother do not allow the baby to "breathe", control every step, every action, then a runny nose will act as additional protection against them.

Treatment

Vasoconstrictor drops, inhalations can bring only a temporary effect, without painstaking work on oneself, nasal diseases are almost impossible to eliminate. An adult needs to ask himself what exactly prevents him from breathing and living the way he likes, what worries him. The answer may be very unexpected, but it will be the key to recovery. The found reason must be thanked from the heart, let go. If everything is done sincerely, then the runny nose will not return.

The child must be shown to the pediatrician... Even if, after reading this article, you completely understand the real reasons for his ailment, it is important that the baby is examined by a doctor. In this case, psychological assistance to the child will speed up the process of traditional treatment. and will be an excellent prevention of the return of the disease.

It is important not to limit yourself in aspirations - to live the way you dream, and not the way someone demands of you, even if a very authoritative and respected person. Only people who are open to the world never experience problems with their nose.
