Powder "ACTS 100" for children: instructions for use

A child's cough bothers any mother and makes her want to help her baby immediately. In the fight against this symptom, mucolytic agents are often used to help make the viscous sputum more fluid. Among such remedies, a very popular drug from the Sandoz company called ACC 100. Can it be taken by children and how does the child's body react to this drug? In what dose and how many times should ACC be given to a child with a cough?

Release form

ACC 100 is produced in three versions:

  • Effervescent tablets. They are packed in tubes (one contains 20 pieces) and are round flat tablets that have a blackberry smell and a white color. After dissolving such a tablet, a clear, colorless liquid is formed, which smells like blackberries. Let's admit a slight sulfur smell.
  • Granules from which the solution is prepared (it is given to the child to drink). They are white and uniform, smell like orange and are packaged in 3 gram bags. One package contains 20 sachets. After stirring the granules in water, an orange drink is obtained.
  • Syrup... The content of the active substance in this form of ACC is 100 mg per 5 ml of syrup. The medicine is a slightly viscous transparent liquid without color, which has a cherry smell. It is placed in a 100 ml dark glass bottle.

Composition

The active ingredient in ACC 100 is acetylcysteine. Its content, as can be understood from the name of the medication, is 100 mg in each packet or in one effervescent tablet. Additional ingredients are:

  • Effervescent tablets - Na carbonate, Na saccharinate, ascorbic acid, Na citrate, citric acid, lactose, Na bicarbonate, mannitol, blackberry flavor.
  • Granules - saccharin, vitamin C, sucrose, orange flavor.
  • The syrup contains Na saccharinate, water, Na benzoate, Na hydroxide, disodium edetate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, Na carmellose, cherry flavor.

Operating principle

The acetylcysteine contained in ACC 100 has a mucolytic effect. Such a compound directly affects the phlegm that is produced in the respiratory tract, as a result of which the rheological characteristics of the mucus change. The drug destroys the bonds of mucopolysaccharides present in the secretion, which leads to a decrease in the viscosity of the sputum. It is noted that the medicine actively dilutes mucus, even when there is pus in the bronchi.

Acetylcysteine also has antioxidant effects. Such a substance activates the production of glutathione and neutralizes radicals arising from oxidative reactions. As a result, the drug activates the protection of cells in the respiratory tract and reduces the severity of inflammation.

It is not recommended to give the medicine later than 6 pm in order not to disturb the child's sleep. For greater therapeutic effect, it is recommended to give children more drink.

The dose of the drug is determined based on the age of the little patient:

  • If the child is not yet 6 years old, then he is given 200 to 300 mg of acetylcysteine per day. This amount is divided into 2 doses, therefore a single dosage will be 1-1.5 tablets or 1-1.5 pack of granules. If the drug is given in syrup, then a single dose at the age of 2-5 years will be 5 or 7.5 ml.
  • Children over 6 years old up to 14 years old withthe weft amount of acetylcysteine for a therapeutic effect is 300-400 mg. Since the drug is taken twice a day, a single dose will be 150-200 mg, which corresponds to 1.5-2 effervescent tablets ACC 100, 7.5-10 ml of syrup or 1.5-2 packs of ACC 100 granules. It turns out that from the age of six it is more convenient to use the ACC 200.
  • Child 14 and older give from 400 to 600 mg of acetylcysteine per day. The drug is taken from 1 to 3 times a day, therefore, ACC 200 and ACC Long are more in demand.

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually, but acute pathology is often treated within 5 or 7 days.

Overdose

If the child takes too high a dose of ACC, it will lead to nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. To help in this situation, symptomatic therapy is used.

Interaction with other drugs

  • Do not dilute ACC 100 granules or tablets in a glass with any other medicines.
  • If the child is given activated charcoal or other sorbent, the effectiveness of the ACC 100 treatment will decrease.
  • The simultaneous use of ACC 100 and antitussives is prohibited, since after suppression of the cough reflex, the mucolytic effect of acetylcysteine will provoke sputum stagnation.
  • By adding bronchodilators to the ACC 100 treatment, the effectiveness of therapy will increase.
  • ACC 100 can interfere with the antimicrobial effect of some antibiotics, for example, penicillin or cephalosporin drugs. Between taking such medications, a pause of at least 2 hours is required.
