Rengalin for children: instructions for use

Many mothers and pediatricians consider homeopathic medicines to be ineffective, but there are many parents who, in practice, were convinced of the effectiveness of such remedies in their children. In the fight against cough, a drug called Rengalin is often used. This is a product of the well-known company Materia Medica, which also produces Anaferon, Agri and Ergoferon - drugs used for ARVI and colds.

The manufacturer recommends using Rengalin for any cough in both adults and children over 3 years old. But before giving this drug to a child, parents should learn about its features, possible harmful effects and treatment regimens used in childhood.

Release form

Rengalin is presented in two dosage forms.

  • A solution that is taken orally. It has a sweet taste (because of it, the product is often called syrup), there is practically no color and smell. This solution is clear and is sold in glass vials that have a plastic dropper. One bottle holds 100 milliliters of the product.

  • Tablets to be sucked in the mouth. They also have a sweet taste, have a cylindrical flat shape and a white color. One side of the tablet is labeled "Rengalin", and on the other, the words "Materia Medica" and Risk can be seen. The drug is packed in blisters of 10 tablets and sold in 10, 20 or 50 pieces in one box.

Composition

Both types of "Rengalin" contain antibodies to three compounds as active substances:

  • to morphine;
  • to bradykinin;
  • to histamine.

They undergo a special affinity purification and are applied to a substrate, which is maltitol in solution, and isomalt in tablets. The amount of each type of antibody in 100 ml of liquid "Rengalin" is 0.12 g, and one tablet contains 0.006 g each.

Inactive components of the solution are glycerol and potassium sorbate, as well as purified water and citric acid. The tablet form also contains anhydrous citric acid. In addition, magnesium stearate is added to such "Rengalin" for a dense structure, and the sweet taste of the preparation is provided by saccharin and sodium cyclamate.

Operating principle

While taking Rengalin, the following clinical effects are observed:

  • a decrease in the duration and intensity of cough during the day, as well as at night;
  • reducing the severity of inflammation in the respiratory tract;
  • reduction of painful sensations when coughing;
  • elimination of edema of the mucous membrane of the respiratory system.

All of them are associated with the presence of antibodies to active substances in both forms of the drug. Such antibodies are capable of influencing the corresponding receptors - bradykinin, histamine and opioid. The result of this influence will be the following processes:

  • the excitability of the brain in the area of the cough center decreases;
  • impulses to the brain from peripheral receptors are blocked, which prevents the implementation of the cough reflex and reduces pain;
  • the muscles of the bronchial tree relaxes (the spasm is eliminated);
  • symptoms of an allergic reaction are smoothed out.

Indications

The drug is recommended both for dry, unproductive cough, which is provoked by a spasm of the respiratory tract, and for a wet cough, during which a lot of phlegm is formed, but it is too viscous, which prevents its active separation. The tool also copes well with residual and lingering cough that occurs with acute respiratory infections and does not go away for a long time. The reason for prescribing Rengalin in any form is:

  • flu;
  • inflammation of the bronchi;
  • cold;
  • cough caused by an allergic reaction;
  • laryngitis;
  • pneumonia;
  • tuberculosis;
  • laryngotracheitis;
  • ARVI;
  • pharyngitis and other respiratory diseases.

According to the manufacturer's information, it is best to start giving the drug in the early days of the illness, when the symptoms are very pronounced. In this case, the effect of "Rengalin" will be most pronounced.

At what age is it allowed?

As noted above, the treatment of children with Rengalin is not possible until the age of three. Such frames are provided for both liquid preparation and tablets. They are due to the lack of research on the effect of "Rengalin" on children 2 years of age and younger. If a cough has arisen in a patient who is not yet 3 years old, together with a doctor, you should select an analogue for him that can be used in the first years of life without fear.

Contraindications

Both types of "Rengalin" are not used in case of hypersensitivity to the active or auxiliary ingredients of the selected form. Due to the presence of maltitol, the liquid preparation should also not be given to children with fructose intolerance. If the child has diabetes mellitus, then the use of the solution requires caution and medical supervision. There are no other contraindications for treatment with such a remedy.

Side effects

In rare cases, Rengalin causes an allergic reaction, which can manifest itself as a rash, swelling, itching of the skin and other negative symptoms. Such a reaction can occur during treatment, sometimes even after the first dose of the drug. In this case, "Rengalin" is immediately canceled, and if the child's general condition has worsened, a doctor's examination is recommended.

Other side effects are usually not observed while taking Rengalin. The drug does not provoke drowsiness and is not able to suppress breathing. In addition, it does not develop habituation, so the course of treatment can last as long as it takes to get rid of the cough.

Instructions for use

"Rengalin" in liquid form is given to the child to swallow, dosing it with an ordinary teaspoon (one spoon contains 5 ml of the drug). The patient's diet does not affect the time of taking the drug. A single dose of the solution, depending on the disease, can be either 5 ml or 10 ml per dose.

In order for the components of the product to affect the child's body more strongly, the manufacturer recommends not swallowing the solution immediately, but leaving it in the oral cavity for a while and only then swallowing it.

Most often, "Rengalin" is given to the child to drink three times a day, but with a strong cough, the doctor can increase the frequency of admission up to 6 times. Usually, more frequent use of the drug is recommended in the first days of the disease, when the symptoms are more pronounced, and as soon as the cough begins to pass, the drug is given according to the standard scheme (three times). The remedy is taken until complete recovery.

As for the use of the "Rengalin" tablet, for treatment with this form you need to know about the following nuances:

  • the tablet must be placed in the mouth and kept until completely dissolved;
  • as in the case of treatment with a solution, meals do not affect the time of the tablet resorption;
  • it is not required to drink the product with water;
  • it is recommended to check the dosage with a doctor, since one tablet is sometimes enough for one dose, and some patients should dissolve 2 pieces at once;
  • the duration of admission is also agreed with the pediatrician, but usually the remedy is given until the cough disappears;
  • most often the remedy is prescribed three times, but with a very strong cough, the frequency of use, as in the case of the solution, can increase up to 4-6 times a day.

In solid form, the drug is given only to those children who already know how to dissolve pills, and will not swallow the drug right away. Otherwise, the tabletted "Rengalin" should be replaced with a solution.

Overdose

If, due to parental oversight or for some other reason, the child receives an overdose of Rengalin, this can cause loose stools, severe nausea and other symptoms of dyspepsia. Such irritation of the digestive tract soon goes away on its own, but in some cases the patient should be examined by a doctor in order to prescribe symptomatic therapy.

Interaction with other drugs

According to the information provided by the manufacturer, Rengalin is compatible with any other medications. For this reason, doctors easily include such a remedy in the complex of therapy for bronchitis, laryngitis and other diseases, combining with expectorant drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and so on.

Terms of sale

Both forms of the drug are sold in pharmacies as over-the-counter drugs, so you don't need to show a doctor's prescription to buy them, but a specialist consultation is recommended. The dosage form affects the price of Rengalin - one bottle of solution costs 220-270 rubles, and for 20 tablets you need to pay an average of 180-200 rubles.

Storage conditions

The shelf life of both liquid preparation and Rengalin tablets is 3 years. It is indicated on the packaging of the product and must be checked before the start of admission so that the child does not receive an expired drug. Until the end of the shelf life, keep both types of "Rengalin" at home at a temperature not higher than +25 degrees Celsius, hiding the product out of the reach of babies.

Reviews

Approximately 70-80% of reviews on the use of "Rengalin" in children are positive. Especially often they buy a liquid product for young patients. It is praised for its pleasant taste, effective cough relief, and an affordable price. According to mothers, it is very easy to give such a solution to a child, because it is sweet and easy to dose.

The advantages of tablets also include their taste, good tolerance and effectiveness for different types of cough. However, there are also reviews that describe the lack of a positive effect. In such reviews, parents note that Rengalin did not suit their children and instead had to use another medicine prescribed for coughing.

Analogs

Depending on the characteristics of the cough and its causes, the doctor may replace Rengalin with either another homeopathic remedy or a herbal remedy or antitussive medicine. One of the following drugs may be used instead of a solution or tablets.

  • Stodal. Children like this homeopathic syrup from Boiron with a pleasant caramel taste. It contains many homeopathic substances, among which there are coccus cacti, bryony, ipeca, drozera, pulsatilla and other ingredients. The main reason for using the syrup is any type of cough, as well as for the use of Rengalin. At the same time, you can give Stodal to children at any age, but first you need to discuss such treatment with a doctor.

  • Ambrobene. The effect of this medication is due to a substance called ambroxol. It is able to liquefy too viscous phlegm and improve its coughing, therefore "Ambrobene" is used for various diseases of the respiratory tract. The advantages of the drug include not only effective action and safety for children (the drug can be used from birth), but also a variety of dosage forms, since this medication is produced in syrup, solution for inhalation, tablets, long-acting capsules and solution for injections. It can be replaced with other ambroxol preparations, for example, Lazolvan, Flavamed or Bronhorus syrup.

  • "Ascoril". This multicomponent syrup can be prescribed to children over a year old with any bronchopulmonary pathologies. Thanks to salbutamol, it relieves bronchospasm, and bromhexine and guaifenesin in its composition have a mucolytic effect and facilitate the excretion of bronchial secretions. There is also "Ascoril" in tablets, but it is not used until 6 years.

  • "Gedelix". This expectorant, which comes in two forms, is based on ivy leaf extract. Syrup "Gedelix" can be used in children from birth, and drops are prescribed for one-year-old children and older patients. It can be replaced by Prospan, which also contains ivy extract and is produced in the same liquid forms.

  • "Erespal". The main component of this syrup is fenspiride. It is able to affect receptors for histamine and bradykinin, thereby inhibiting bronchospasm and reducing the severity of inflammation. The drug can be used from the age of two and, if necessary, is replaced by analogues, which include "Erispirius", "Sirep" and "Eladon".
