Combined wallpaper for a children's room

Renovating a nursery doesn't have to be boring - it can be turned into an interesting creative process. It is enough to cover the walls with not one type of wallpaper, but at least two - then the result can exceed even the most optimistic expectations.

Pros and cons

There are a number of reasons why the idea of combining different types of wallpaper is not just interesting, but ingenious. The reasons for choosing a combination of wallpaper can be the advantages of the finished result:

  • You have two children, but there is only one children's room, which is why the kids are deprived of their own corner? "Break" the room in half with wallpaper - and personal zones will appear, and it will turn out to please everyone's tastes.
  • Relaxation needs pleasant gentle tones, for work - more strict solutions, but it's better to play among bright highlights. What to choose for a nursery, in which even one child needs this whole palette at once? All together - divide the room into zones!
  • Is one of the walls a curve? Highlight the opposite wall with wallpaper - then all eyes will be turned on it.
  • Remaining extra wallpaper from repair in other rooms? Don't throw them away - use them in combination to create an unusual design.

You need to combine wallpaper at least so that the room does not look too commonplace. It is also a great way out if you cannot choose any one kind of wallpaper. The only thing that could be called a disadvantage of the combination is that not everyone will succeed, and the end result may be more disappointing than pleasing.

Combination methods

There are at least seven ways to combine wallpaper, each of which is used for a specific purpose and gives an effect that is not similar to other ways:

  • Vertical combination "Raises" the ceiling and allows you not to rack your brains over the joining of the pattern and the wallpaper itself. When using three or more different types, limit yourself to only one wall, otherwise the room will ripple in the eyes.
  • Horizontal combination - this is a classic, it allows you to visually enlarge the room, but makes the ceiling "lower". Thanks to the use of borders, it is permissible to combine wallpapers of different thicknesses and textures, but dark shades are usually glued at the bottom, and light shades at the top. This solution is not suitable for accents, it is designed for the whole room.

Practical - to paste over the lower part with less easily soiled wallpaper that allows wet cleaning.

  • Accent on a wall, niche, ledge... It is done using bright wallpaper, contrasting with the relatively calm finish of the room as a whole. If the accent is darker, the wall seems to move away, and vice versa.
  • Panel. When there is not much extra wallpaper left, make a "picture" of them on the wall, straightening the resulting canvas with moldings or borders.
  • Combination with a ceiling. When wallpapering the ceiling as well, highlight it with a separate color so that it stands out from the walls.
  • Patchwork. A very stylish result is obtained if you focus on one of the walls, decorating it with scraps of many types of checkered wallpaper or in any other complex geometric pattern.
  • "Deformation" of the room. If the room is planned somewhat poorly, correct it by choosing two types of wallpaper. Light colors seem to bring the surface closer, and dark ones move away; paste over the ends with those shades that will give the desired effect.

We combine textures

The combination of different textures and materials within the same room is possible, but achieving a good result can be problematic due to the differences in thickness. There are two ways to solve the problem - either do not glue wallpaper of different thicknesses on one wall, highlighting one of the walls or the ceiling entirely, or cover the joints with a wallpaper border. The second option is available only when combining horizontally or when creating a panel.

Wallpapers of natural origin - bamboo and cork - combine well with the texture of any other wallpaper. The same can be said about chalk wallpaper, but simpler options such as paper, non-woven, vinyl are combined only without visible joints.

Choosing the right colors

The most important thing when choosing wallpaper for combination is to remember that combined wallpapers can look completely different, but at least one of the factors should combine them either by the principle of similarity or by the principle of opposition.

Among such factors are color, pattern, texture. As for the principles of combination, they look like this:

  • Best match wallpaper of the same color, but with a different pattern, or decorated in related, albeit different shades - like pink and cream or green and light green.
  • Contrasting looks great combining, first of all, white with black, as well as other pronounced contrasts.
  • To accentuate a combination of a monochromatic coating with a variegated one is also used, but then the main tone of the first should be present in the palette of the second.
  • It looks interesting and unusual a combination of different, but somewhat similar patterns, for example, different floral prints of the same size and shade, or, conversely, of a similar shape, but slightly different colors.

How to combine wallpaper in a boy's and a girl's bedroom?

There are standard options that are generally accepted as girlish or, conversely, boyish.

For girls, gentle combinations are usually chosen that emphasize the romance of nature. Timeless classics are lilac, lilac and cream; combinations of different shades of pink are worth mentioning separately.

The "spring" palette is also very popular, consisting of yellow and green, possibly complemented by pink and white accents.

The most popular combination for boys is that which provides the nautical style so beloved by parents of sons - blue, white and red. Since the boys are hunters, they should like the colors of the forest (green and brown with yellow) or savannah (sand and yellow with orange).

If children of different genders live in the same nursery, try to zone the room so that it does not have bright distortions either in favor of the daughter or in favor of the son - it is better to use the most calm tones and simple patterns.

General Tips

All of the above can be supplemented with a few more simple tips that will allow you to achieve an interesting result without puzzling in vain:

  • Better between ourselves are combined a plain or relatively neutral coating with an expressive, but simple pattern - a strip or check, in a diamond or polka dot.
  • Finish colors significantly affects the character of the child - bright colors excite him, and calm ones - accordingly, soothe. For this reason, wallpapers are usually chosen according to the opposite of the character of the baby.

  • South-facing rooms, are distinguished by bright natural illumination and warm up better, therefore, wallpaper of cold colors is often glued there. With those rooms, the windows of which face north, the situation is exactly the opposite.
  • If the room is small and it needs to be visually enlarged, it is better to paste over it with light wallpaper, and when choosing a pattern, focus on smaller elements, which fit a lot even on a small wall. A room that is too spacious is narrowed due to darker tones and large drawings.

Interior design ideas

The first example is a vivid demonstration of many combination principles at once. Here, at the same time, horizontal, with division with a border, and vertical (in the lower part) combination. The bottom is made of plain, albeit colored, stripes of spring colors, and the top is decorated with a simple pattern of butterflies. The background of the top echoes with the pink stripes at the bottom, giving the interior a cohesive look.

A very bright accent is obtained if all the walls are made completely monochromatic, and one is selected with the help of an image, for example, a flower arrangement, as in the second photo.

The green color of the base not only goes well with the background of the accented wall, but is also present on it in some details.

Even if a rather complex picture is chosen for the accent design, which is significantly superior in detail to any pattern, you can still highlight one or several basic tones there - in their gamut and paste over the room.
