Newborn care

Taking proper care of your newborn baby's ears

Caring for the ears of a newborn baby requires strict adherence to the rules, because they are easy to injure. The length of the ear canal is small and the tympanic membrane is not yet protected by its natural curve, as in an adult. Because of the same features, inflammatory processes develop quite easily in children's ears.

How to properly clean the ears of a newborn from wax

To remove sulfur, it is better to use a cotton ball. It is possible to use large (children's) cotton swabs, which have a limiter. Before the procedure, the cotton wool must be moistened, but so that water droplets do not come out from it when pressed.

A cotton flagella is passed over the visible areas of the skin of the external auditory canal. Movements are light, without strong pressure. Instead of contaminated cotton wool, take a clean one and repeat the procedure until the ear wax is completely removed. It is enough to clean the baby's ears from sulfur 1-2 times a week.

You can't:

  • insert a stick or cotton flag inside the ear canal;
  • use a wet cotton wool from which water flows;
  • strongly rub the skin of the ear.

Do not worry about the cleanliness of the inner part of the ear, the sulfur comes out of it perfectly on its own when the baby sucks during feeding. When you try to clear the inside of your ear canal, you are only pushing the wax deeper. Thus, you create an obstacle for self-cleaning of the ear canal.

Daily care

In addition to regularly cleaning the ears from wax, it is necessary to carry out constant care of the outer ear of the child. The curls of the auricle are wiped 1-2 times a week with a moistened cotton swab. To do this, the child's ear is pulled back in order to be able to process all the bends, folds and curls.

Every morning, while washing your face, you need to wipe the skin behind the ears with a cotton ball dipped in boiled water. When diaper rash, crusts or irritations appear in this area, wipe the skin with petroleum jelly after bathing and washing. (daily childcare)

How to prevent ear diseases

  1. During bathing, it is necessary to ensure that no water gets into the ear of the crumbs. If this happens, then you can attach a cotton flagellum to the external auditory canal, this will help dry it.
  2. After feeding, place the baby in a "column" so that during spitting up milk does not get into the Eustachian tube, which connects the ear to the nasopharynx.
  3. During walks in windy weather, the baby should wear a cap that covers the ears.
  4. The cap must be selected according to the weather, as when overheating, prickly heat and diaper rash occur behind the ears.

Subject to the basic rules of caring for the ears of a newborn and measures to prevent pain in the ear, the baby is not threatened.
