How to breastfeed with big breasts: tips for new mothers

Usually, owners of breasts of size D and more perceive it as a virtue, which they emphasize in every possible way. Everything changes dramatically with the birth of a baby. From this moment on, large breasts begin to cause inconvenience. If she does not strive to cover the face of the crumbs, then she definitely does not allow him to take a comfortable position for feeding. And it is difficult for a newborn to capture a large nipple halo as recommended by breastfeeding consultants and pediatric books.

All this causes a real panic in the young mother and the thought that it would be better to transfer the child to formula. Pull yourself together and do not rush to interrupt lactation because of the first difficulties. Our tips will help you make breastfeeding comfortable with large breasts.

Comfortable feeding positions

To get rid of the inconvenience of breastfeeding with large breasts, breastfeeding consultants recommend taking comfortable positions for mom and baby:

  1. The most convenient way to feed is lying on its side. Find the most comfortable position for yourself on the bed and place the baby so that its face is on your chest, while holding the baby's head and neck with your hand. While remaining in this position, try to relax and do not make any sudden movements.
  2. You can put the baby to your breast, and lie down, turning a little on your side - so that the breast slightly deviates to the side. In this position, the baby, who is not yet holding the head, will be more comfortable.
  3. Sometimes it is more convenient to feed the baby on the changing table. In this case, the chest is completely on the table. The only negative is that mom has to stand.
  4. It is optimal to feed from under the arm with a lush bust. Place the baby on a pillow, take a comfortable position on the bed and place the baby in your armpit.
  5. The classic "cradle" pose will be comfortable if you put the baby not on your knees, but on a pillow. You need to feed, leaning back on the back of a sofa or chair.

Correct breastfeeding by a child

Enlarged nipple halos are a serious problem when feeding with large breasts. The baby cannot capture such a halo completely, so he may not gorge himself, although he sucks for a long time. Because of this, mothers often have cracks in the nipples.

This is why it is important to insert the nipple as deeply into the baby's rock as possible. To do this, fold the breast parallel to the baby's lips and insert the nipple when he opens his mouth wide. The entire halo will still not be in the mouth, but most of it will be involved.

Comfort feeding devices

Useful tools will help you to quickly establish breastfeeding, get rid of discomfort and learn to enjoy the process itself.

Pillow for feeding

You have most likely used a C-shaped pillow during pregnancy (see How to Choose a Pregnant Pillow). It is also useful when feeding crumbs. If you put it under the baby, then the chest will not cover his face. Even with such a pillow, you will not need to lean on your elbow, so even long feeding will become comfortable.

Nursing bra

The special nursing bra helps to maintain the shape of the breast during lactation. It also facilitates the process itself. This bra does not need to be removed - you can only expose the nipple to feed the baby.

Breast pump

Mothers with lush breasts often have milk stagnation, although this is not related to the size of the breast (many people think that more milk is formed in a large one than in a small one). In fact, the cause of milk stagnation is the incorrect capture of the nipple by the baby. In such cases, a breast pump comes to the rescue. Express milk with them until the breast is soft - and gradually the feeding becomes comfortable.
