Helping your baby cope with the heat at home and outdoors

Sweltering heat is the main factor that can ruin a summer vacation for a family with children. For children, this is an even bigger problem, they endure the heat even harder than adults. The body of very young children is still unable to fully exercise thermoregulation, therefore, heat is especially dangerous for babies. Every parent should know how to help their child cope with the summer heat.

In room

  • be sure to ventilate the room at least twice a day: in the morning and in the evening, when the temperature drops;
  • use thicker dark curtains to keep the sun from heating the air;
  • additionally humidify the air by spraying water from a spray gun or use special humidifiers. Our grandmothers hung up wet cloth;
  • it is better to undress very small children;
  • pediatricians advise turning on the air conditioner only in the absence of the child.

Sweat is an excellent breeding ground for various disease-causing microbes. Therefore, the baby must be wiped with wet wipes or a wet towel.

Street walks

It is equally important to properly prepare for a walk in the fresh air, because the open sun can lead to sunstroke and burns.

  • choose time for walks either before 12 noon or after 4 pm;
  • while swimming, children should not be in the open sun for a long time (in the water for 10 minutes, then in the shade);
  • the child should drink more (water, juices, cool tea), if he is breastfeeding, then he should be applied more often;
  • clothes are exceptionally light, made from natural fabrics, linen, cotton, a headdress is required;
  • parents should control the frequency of toilet visits. If the child does not pee or is constipated, the first sign of dehydration is;
  • try not to use diapers in heat - they lead to diaper rash.

When walking in the bright sun and heat, be sure to use sunscreens with a protection index of at least 50 for very young children under one year old and 30 for children over one year old.

The main mistake parents make is forcing them to eat. A child in a heat may not have an appetite and this is normal. This leads to nausea and poor health. It is better to give the child more to drink, and feed during the day strictly as desired.

When choosing a place for walking in hot weather, you should be especially careful. The best option is a park or area near a reservoir. Walking near roads with a lot of cars is harmful to the health of a small child. There is too much harmful exhaust gases here, plus hot air of heated asphalt.
