Brown urine in a child

Since brown is uncommon for urine, this can be very disturbing for parents. Is brown urine a symptom of an illness, and in what cases does a child's urine become darker?

Possible reasons

Dehydration is a very common cause of dark colored urine. For example, urine turns brown if a child has a high body temperature or is overheated. As soon as the child starts drinking enough water, the urine regains its light yellow hue.

Also, urine can change its color under the influence of medications, for example, it turns brown if you give a child metronidazole, anti-malaria drugs, levodopa, drugs based on senna. As soon as the drugs are discontinued, the urine gradually brightens.

Coloring products

A brown tint in a child's urine can be caused by eating too much legumes, black tea, rhubarb, beef, and other foods. If you notice that your child's urine turns brown after any such product, you do not need to worry. Color will be normal again soon.

Diseases

A brown tint can appear when:

  • Diseases of the liver, as well as the gallbladder. A brown tint in this case appears due to the excretion of bilirubin and other bile pigments in the urine.
  • Infectious diseases of the kidneys and bladder with the release of blood or pus.
  • Glomerulonephritis.
  • Urolithiasis (if the stone injures the urinary tract and causes bleeding).
  • Tumors of the kidneys or urinary tract.
  • Melanoma in the urinary system (extremely rare).

Additional symptoms for anxiety

If the reason for the brown tint of urine is problems in the liver, the baby will have such unfavorable signs as a yellow tint of the sclera and skin, itching, weakness, pain in the abdomen on the right, and the child's stool will become discolored.

When should i see a doctor?

You should immediately show your baby to a doctor if:

  • The child's feces became colorless.
  • The child has severe itching of the skin.
  • The kid complains of abdominal pain.
  • You have noticed that the baby's skin has a yellow tint.
  • You shake the container of urine and see yellow foam.
  • The baby has lowered blood pressure and decreased heart rate.
  • The child has a fever.
  • The kid feels discomfort when urinating.
  • In addition to the discoloration, the urine developed an unusual pungent odor.
  • The child urinates more often than usual.
