First aid kit for a newborn: a list of necessary

When preparing for childbirth, the expectant mother usually makes important shopping lists. One of the items that should not be forgotten while waiting for a newborn is a first aid kit. Its contents will help the baby in case of illness and relieve parents from the need to run for medicines or other necessary medical items at night.

First aid kit in the hospital

Put everything you need in the first days of your baby's life in a convenient plastic container or cosmetic bag (if these funds are not offered in the hospital after the baby is born):

  • Baby cream.
  • Powder.
  • Wet wipes.
  • Cotton pads.
  • Bepanten. This tool copes well with diaper rash on the baby's skin, and with cracked nipples in the mother.
  • Cotton swabs, dropper, brilliant green and peroxide for navel treatment.

Ready-made first aid kit

Now on sale in pharmacy chains there are ready-made first-aid kits for children, but they may not contain the things or medicines needed for your child, and some funds will be superfluous. It is more preferable to write your own list of everything that will be needed to maintain the health of the baby after childbirth.

A ready-made first-aid kit should be purchased in situations where hygiene products and medicines are needed urgently, for example, childbirth began ahead of schedule, and the expectant mother has not yet had time to prepare a first-aid kit for the maternity hospital.

Hygiene products

In the house where the newborn lives, you need to have:

  • Bathing product. A great choice would be a special baby soap in a package with a dispenser.
  • Wrinkle cream.
  • Powder. It is desirable without any aromatic additives. It is applied to the baby's skin before putting on a diaper and is not used with baby cream.
  • Massage oil approved for use in newborns.
  • Cotton buds for navel treatment. Also get stopper sticks that you can use to wipe your auricle.
  • Non-sterile cotton wool for the manufacture of flagella, with which the nose and ears are processed.
  • Wet wipes for children.
  • Cotton pads.
  • Vaseline oil, which can be used to treat crusts on the scalp and lubricate the tip of an enema or thermometer before inserting it into the rectum.
  • Special scissors.
  • An aspirator, the function of which is to suck out the contents of the baby's nose.
  • Bath thermometer. It will help to measure the temperature of the water before swimming.
  • Medicinal herbs that are brewed and added to the bath. Most often these are chamomile, string and motherwort.

Means and items that will be needed in case of illness

  • Thermometer for measuring the temperature of the baby's body. When choosing a suitable thermometer, keep in mind that it is much more convenient to measure it electronically, and mercury readings are more accurate.
  • Syringe 25 ml for enema.
  • Gas outlet tube.
  • Pipettes with rounded end, stored in a case. They are used to inject medicinal solutions into the baby's nose or ears.
  • Dosing spoon for medicines. It can be replaced with a special graduated syringe.
  • Sterile cotton and sterile bandage packaging.
  • Gauze or disposable mask.
  • Measuring cup.

Antiseptics

Funds of this group are needed to treat the navel in the first month of life, as well as to disinfect the baby's skin when wounds appear.

Be sure to buy for a baby first aid kit and keep at home:

  • Hydrogen peroxide.
  • Medical alcohol.
  • Brilliant green solution.
  • Chlorophyllipt solution.
  • Potassium permanganate to add to the bath until light pink.
  • Iodine solution.
  • Furacilin in tablets for the preparation of a solution with which the eyes or genitals of the child are washed.
  • Bactericidal plasters.

Medicines

In the treatment of newborns and the prevention of diseases in childhood, the following medications are used:

  • Antipyretic drugs. It is desirable that there are two forms of such medicines in the house - both candles and syrup.
  • Means against dysbiosis, for example, baby bifiform, bifidumbacterin, lactomune and others.
  • Sorbents prescribed to a baby in case of poisoning are most often activated carbon or smecta.
  • Means for diaper rash - bepanten or sudokrem.
  • Anesthetic gum gel, such as Kamistad or Dentol.
  • Vitamins - most often vitamin D is used in the form of an aqueous solution before the age of one year.
  • Seawater-based nasal sprays and solutions, such as Aquamaris or Humer.
  • Remedies for conjuntivitis, such as albucid.
  • Colic remedies - espumisan, plantex, bobotik, babyino and others.
  • Antihistamines such as zodak or fenistil.

Storing a baby first aid kit

Having bought all the necessary components and putting them together, you should take care of the issue of storing the first-aid kit for the baby.

  • After dividing all the items in the baby first aid kit into 2 parts, put them in 2 separate boxes. The first box should contain items for everyday use, so keep it close at hand. In the second box, put all the items that you may need in case of illness. It should be kept in a dry, shaded place separate from adult medication.
  • Check your medicine cabinet for any medications that are important to store under certain conditions. For example, antipyretic suppositories should be kept in a refrigerator.
  • Do not throw away the packaging of medicines and instructions for them in order to check the expiration dates and dosages at any time.
  • Review the medicines in the children's first-aid kit every 3 months and throw out expired funds in time, buying new ones.
  • Write down the emergency numbers on the sheet and put this sheet in the medicine cabinet.
