The use of Miramistin in the treatment of children under one year old

Among the many antiseptic agents that are now sold in the pharmacy, the domestic drug Miramistin is in great demand. It is prescribed for both adults and young patients. But is it allowed to use such a medicine in infants, when it is advisable and in what dosage can Miramistin be used in children under one year old?

Release form and composition

The medicine is presented as a clear solution that does not have any smell, taste and color. Such a liquid includes only two ingredients - an active substance, also called miramistin, and purified water. The concentration of the active compound is 0.01%.

In pharmacies, you can see different packages of Miramistin, differing in both volume and attachments. In childhood, a 150 ml bottle of medicine is most often recommended, to which you can attach a spray bottle. But for the smallest patients, smaller packaging is also suitable - bottles of 50 ml of solution, which have two nozzles (urological and spray).

The drug has a shelf life of 3 years and should be discarded after completion. Storage of the solution does not require any special regimen - it is recommended to keep the package with the medicine out of the reach of babies at room temperature. You do not need a prescription to purchase Miramistin in a pharmacy. The average price of 150 ml of the drug is about 350 rubles.

How does it work?

Miramistin is able to destroy many harmful microorganisms, among which are called staphylococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, streptococcus, chlamydia and other pathogens. The drug works against some viruses and many types of fungi, including candida. At the same time, the solution does not irritate the skin and mucous membrane, and also does not damage cells that remained intact after the attack of an infectious agent. In addition, Miramistin has an anti-inflammatory effect, it accelerates healing and reduces the resistance of pathogens to antifungal and antimicrobial agents.

Indications for use

Annotation to the solution contains information that the medicine is intended for patients over 3 years old. But in fact, many doctors classify Miramistin as harmless and low-toxic, so they even prescribe it to babies.

In children under one year old, Miramistin is used for:

  • Diaper rash.
  • Stomatitis.
  • SARS and colds.
  • Angina.
  • Burns.
  • Bronchitis.
  • Otitis.
  • Laryngitis.
  • Runny nose.
  • Thrush.
  • Tonsillitis.
  • Gingivitis.
  • Conjunctivitis.
  • Chickenpox.
  • Sinusitis.
  • Adenoiditis.
  • Insect bites.
  • Pustular or fungal skin diseases.

In addition, the drug is also used for prophylaxis, for example, with a high risk of a viral infection, with cuts, abrasions and other skin lesions.

Contraindications

The medicine should not be splashed, dripped or applied to the skin if the child has Miramistin intolerance. There are no other contraindications to treatment with this antiseptic, because such a remedy works only locally.

Side effects

In most babies, Miramistin does not cause any negative reaction. Immediately after treatment, a slight burning sensation may sometimes appear, but after 10-20 seconds it disappears without a trace and does not require any action. However, in rare cases, the medication can provoke allergies. In such a situation, further use of the solution should be abandoned and an analogue should be selected together with a doctor.

What is important to remember when using in infants?

So that the drug does not have a harmful effect on the child's body, and the condition of the crumbs does not worsen, you should be aware of such nuances:

  • The frequency of use of Miramistin under the age of one year should not exceed three times a day, regardless of the reason for the appointment of an antiseptic.

It is important to follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor exactly and to use the medicine as prescribed.

  • Mouth and throat cleaning should be done after feeding, then the drug will remain in the child's oropharynx longer.

  • For infants, the medication is often diluted in a ratio of 1: 1 or 1: 2. Boiled pure water is added to the solution.

  • The duration of drug treatment in infants is determined individually... Sometimes processing is carried out for only 5-7 days, but it can be prescribed for a longer period.
  • If 3-4 days have passed since the beginning of treatment and no improvement is seen, you need to show the baby to the doctor and choose another therapy.
  • If the crumbs develop itching, redness, swelling or other negative reaction, you should immediately show the baby to the doctor.

Instructions for use

  • With a runny nose in each nasal passage it is advised to bury Miramistin 1 drop. Sometimes the doctor prescribes the use of 2 drops at once, but it is unacceptable to exceed this dosage, as this can irritate the mucous membrane.

  • With pharyngitis or sore throat medicine is sprayed into the throat with a nozzle. At an early age, just one press of the spray is enough.

  • If the baby has conjunctivitis, one drop of Miramistin is dripped into each eye. After the injection of the drug, you need to perform a light massage of the eyelids in order to evenly distribute the solution. You can also wipe the baby's eyes with cotton pads dipped in an antiseptic. With this treatment, the movement should be directed from the outer corners of the eye to the inner ones.

  • In the treatment of otitis media the medication is dripped into the baby's ear. A single dosage for children in the first years of life is considered 2 drops in each ear canal. The same method of treatment and the same dosage is used for otitis externa. If older children with such a pathology prefer the use of cotton turundas dipped in Miramistin (they are kept in their ears for 10 to 15 minutes, after which the turundas are carefully removed and thrown away), then in infants it is dangerous and can cause damage to the eardrum.

  • With chickenpox the drug can be used to treat bubbles both on the skin and on the mucous membranes. This will effectively prevent them from festering.

  • If the baby has diaper rash, then the cleansed skin should be irrigated with an antiseptic, and when the treated areas dry out, apply a powder or cream to them.

  • With stomatitis usually rinsing with Miramistin is prescribed, using about 10 ml of solution per procedure. However, in infants, this application is impossible, so you can treat the affected areas using a spray (press the spray nozzle once), or lubricate them with gauze soaked in an antiseptic or cotton swabs.

  • If Miramistin is prescribed to a child with burns or wounds, then the damaged skin should be irrigated with a solution (spray the medication). Also, dressings soaked in medicine are often used.
  • With inflammation of the lower respiratory tract the doctor may prescribe inhalations for which a nebulizer is used.

  • For one procedure, it is required to dilute Miramistin saline 1: 2. The recommended duration of inhalation is 5 minutes, and the frequency is twice or three times a day.

Often there is a need to disinfect the skin and mucous membranes of a child. The pediatrician in the next video explains in what cases Miramistin can be used for this and how best to do it.

What to do in case of eye contact?

The drug has no harmful effect on the mucous membrane of the eye, but it can cause a burning sensation. If it appeared after the medication got into the eyes (the crumb shows discomfort by crying and restless behavior), it is recommended to rinse with clean water.

What to do if a large volume is swallowed?

An overdose of Miramistin is not dangerous and can provoke dysbiosis and nausea. If the baby accidentally swallows the medication, you need to observe the child and immediately seek medical help if the baby becomes ill. To avoid a negative effect, you can give the baby some kind of sorbent.

Reviews

There are many positive reviews on the use of Miramistin as an antiseptic in young children from their parents. In them, the drug is called effective and harmless, as well as easy to use. This medication is also praised by doctors of various profiles - surgeons, pediatricians (including Komarovsky), ENT doctors, dentists, and so on.
