The drugs that contain ambroxol are called among the most effective in treating cough with thick phlegm. One of these tools is Haliksol. In syrup, this medicine can be used for children of any age. However, before use, you should find out about the dosages allowed for babies and the possible negative effect of the medication on the child's body.
Release form and composition
The liquid form of Halixol is sold in brown glass bottles with a white aluminum cap. Inside the bottle is 100 ml of a syrupy sweet liquid with a strawberry-banana scent. It is transparent, normally without sediment. May be pale yellow or colorless. The bottle comes with a plastic dosage cup.
The main ingredient in the syrup is ambroxol hydrochloride. This compound is contained in 10 ml of the drug at a dose of 30 mg and is supplemented with povidone K90, sodium citrate, sorbitol, water, sodium benzoate and citric acid. To make the medicine easier for children to take, a sweetener (sodium cyclamate) and flavors (banana and strawberry) were added to its composition.
In addition to syrup, there is another dosage form of "Halixol". These are tablets that each contain 30 mg of the active compound. Such a remedy can also be used in the treatment of children, but it is contraindicated in patients under 5 years of age. In other forms (capsules, ointments, solution for injections), the drug is not available.
It is sometimes confused with the gum remedy "Holisal" because of the similar name, but these are completely different medicines.
Operating principle
Halixol has expectorant properties. Under the action of its active ingredient, the activity and production of enzymes that are capable of cleaving the bonds of mucopolysaccharides contained in sputum increase. The result of this influence will be a decrease in the viscosity and adhesive properties of mucus, as well as its liquefaction. In addition, the drug stimulates serous cells and increases the volume of the serous component of sputum, which contributes to its more fluid state.
No less valuable properties of "Halixol" are an increase in the activity of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and an increase in the production of surfactant.
Indications
The most common reason for the appointment of "Halixol" is bronchitis, in which the child suffers from a cough with very viscous sputum. The medication is also used for other pathologies of the respiratory system, for example, with:
- pneumonia;
- bronchiectasis;
- bronchial asthma.
Sometimes the medicine is prescribed for otitis media and sinusitis.
Contraindications
Syrup "Halixol" is not prescribed for hypersensitivity to ambroxol or other drug ingredient. This remedy is also contraindicated in ulcerative lesions of the digestive tract.
If a child has kidney disease, medication can only be given under medical supervision.
Side effects
While taking Halixol, a child may develop:
- weakness;
- rash on the skin;
- diarrhea;
- feeling of dry mouth;
- vomiting.
Other ailments are not excluded. In such a situation, it is recommended to cancel the remedy and consult your doctor.
Instructions for use
Reception of "Halixol" is recommended after meals. The medicine is taken into a measuring cup and given to the child, after which they are offered to drink a large volume of water. This will further help thin the phlegm. The duration of use depends on the disease. It is unacceptable to give syrup to a child for more than 4-5 days without medical supervision.
The dosage of the medication for patients of different ages is different.
- A child under two years old is given 2.5 ml of Halixol twice a day;
- In children 2-5 years old, a single dose will be 2.5 ml of syrup, but the frequency of use increases to three times a day;
- A 5-2 year old patient is given 5 ml of medication, the mode of application is two-fold, three-fold (determined by the doctor).
- If the child is over 12 years old, in the first few days he is given 10 ml of syrup three times a day. Then they switch to a double dose in the same dose or reduce a single dose to 5 ml, but continue to use the medicine 3 times.
Overdose and drug interactions
Syrup taken in large doses can cause diarrhea, nausea, and other dyspeptic symptoms. The first aid for a child with an overdose should be stimulation of vomiting. If the patient's condition has worsened, a doctor's examination is needed. With regard to compatibility with other drugs, "Halixol" is not used together with any drugs that suppress the cough reflex. This combination of medications will worsen sputum production and provoke stagnation.

Halixol is sold in pharmacies without a prescription, but it is advisable to examine the child before taking the syrup (especially at an early age). The average price of one bottle is 100-110 rubles.
