"Okomistin" for children: instructions for use

For eye diseases, doctors usually prescribe topical remedies that can destroy disease-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. One of them is the drug of the company "Infamed" called "Okomistin". Many studies and practice of ophthalmologists have confirmed its effectiveness in eye injuries, conjunctivitis, eye surgeries and diseases of the ENT organs.

Release form and composition

Okomistin is a clear solution without any color, which is usually used as eye drops. It can also serve as ear and nasal drops. It is sold in plastic disposable dropper tubes of 1 or 1.5 ml each, in plastic bottles with a dropper stopper of 5 and 10 ml, as well as in glass bottles of 20 ml. One box contains 5-10 dropper tubes or 1-5 bottles.

The drops are caused by a substance called benzyldimethyl 3-myristoylamino-propyl ammonium. It is also known under another name - "miramistin". Its amount in 100 ml of solution is 0.01 g. Sodium chloride and purified water act as auxiliary ingredients of the medication. There are no other compounds, including preservatives or dyes, in Okomistin.

Operating principle

The main component of the drug is active against a large number of infectious agents, including not only harmful bacteria, but also protozoa, fungi and various viruses. Due to this spectrum of action, "Okomistin" belongs to antiseptics. The solution also has an anti-inflammatory effect, enhances local immunity and activates tissue regeneration. At the same time, it does not penetrate into the bloodstream, therefore, the therapeutic effect of Okomistin is exclusively local.

Indications

The most common reason for the use of "Okomistin" is inflammatory diseases of the organ of vision. Such a solution is prescribed for conjunctivitis and keratitis, as well as keratouveitis and blepharitis. In addition to the inflammatory process in the tissues of the eye, "Okomistin" is in demand in such situations:

  • if the child has undergone eye surgery or is preparing for it (the solution will reduce the risk of complications);
  • if the baby has injured his eyes;
  • if the child has developed a chemical or thermal eye burn.

"Okomistin" is also used by ENT doctors, prescribing such drops for patients with sinusitis, rhinitis, bacterial otitis media and otomycosis.

At what age is it prescribed?

The drug can be used both for adolescents and schoolchildren, and for very young children. Such a solution can be dripped even on a newborn baby to prevent eye infections caused by gonococci, chlamydia and other pathogens.

With rhinitis, the age limit for children is from 1 year.

Contraindications

The medication is not prescribed only in case of hypersensitivity to its active ingredient. There are no other contraindications for such a solution.

Side effects

The manufacturer calls "Okomistin" a safe and harmless agent that does not provoke painful sensations, burning sensations and irritation of the mucous membrane. In addition, the solution practically does not cause allergies. Only in rare cases, the child's body reacts to the medication with an allergic reaction, in which it must be canceled.

Instructions for use

Okomistin is used topically to treat the mucous membrane of the eyes or nose, and is also dripped into the ears. In this case, one bottle should be used only for one inflamed area, that is, the agent should not be dripped from one package into the eyes and simultaneously into the ears. In addition, it is not recommended to use one pack of Okomistin for the treatment of several patients. To prevent the contents of the bottle from getting dirty, do not touch the spout of the package to the skin or the surface of the eyes.

The dosage and treatment regimen differ depending on the indication.

  • The solution is dripped to the newborn, one drop immediately after birth, into each eye. The treatment is repeated three times at intervals of 2-3 minutes.
  • If Okomistin is prescribed for conjunctivitis or other infectious eye disease, then the solution should be injected into each conjunctival sac, one or two drops 4-6 times during the day. The medication is used until the symptoms of inflammation disappear, but most often the course of treatment lasts 7-10 days.
  • To prevent complications in surgical treatment, the agent is dripped 2-3 days before the operation and for some time after the intervention (10 days or longer). A single prophylactic dose of "Okomistin" is 1-2 drops of solution. The frequency of application is three times a day.
  • If an eye burn occurs, first it should be rinsed abundantly with water, after which, during the first two hours, drip Okomistin every 5-10 minutes. Then they switch to using 1-2 drops from 4 to 6 times during the day until complete healing.
  • For the treatment of rhinitis or sinusitis, the drug is dripped into the nose 4-6 times a day. 1-2 drops of medication are injected into each nasal passage. The duration of such treatment is up to two weeks.
  • If the child has ear inflammation, then Okomistin is injected four times a day into the ear canal. The tool can be dripped (single dosage - 2-3 drops) or applied to a cotton swab and inserted into the ear. The course of treatment of otitis media with such an antiseptic lasts up to 10 days.

If there is no improvement in the condition after 2-3 days of using "Okomistin", a repeated examination by a doctor and replacement of this medication with another treatment is required.

Overdose and drug interactions

Exceeding the dose of Okomistin does not have a harmful effect and does not require treatment. The combined use of such a solution with topical antibiotics enhances their therapeutic effects. The effect of the drug on other drugs has not been studied.

Most of the reviews about Okomistin are positive. They call the drug effective, harmless and inexpensive. Among its advantages are the possibility of using it for babies, the absence of side effects and convenient packaging. One of the disadvantages of the drug is considered short storage after opening. Mothers do not name any other shortcomings of Okomistin.

Analogs

If Okomistin was not in the pharmacy, then you can use Miramistin instead, because this antiseptic contains the same active compound and is produced by the same company, but in a different package. It can be used not only for various eye diseases, but also in the treatment of pharyngitis, otitis media, burns, dermatitis, adenoids, rhinitis and other pathologies.

In addition, in case of eye diseases, the doctor may replace Okomistin with other drops that act in a similar way, but include other active substances. These include several drugs.

  • "Vitabakt". The action of such drops on pathogens is caused by picloxidine. They are prescribed to children from birth.
  • Signicef. This medicine contains levofloxacin and belongs to fluoroquinolones. It is prescribed for eye infection in children over 1 year old.
  • "Sulfacyl sodium". This sulfanilamide agent is used for eye infections and for their prevention. It is used even for newborn babies.
