Berodual for children

In the treatment of pathologies of the respiratory tract, bronchodilators are often used. One of the drugs in this group is Berodual. Is it possible to prescribe it to children, in what cases is it justified and how to properly treat a child with such a remedy?

Release form

In the pharmacy chain, you can purchase two versions of the drug:

  1. Berodual in the form of a solution... It is a clear liquid without any suspended matter and pronounced odor. One package of such a medication is represented by a 20 ml bottle of solution equipped with a dropper.
  2. Berodual N in aerosol... This is a pocket-sized spray can equipped with a mouthpiece. One 10 ml package contains 200 doses.

Composition

Berodual contains two active ingredients:

  1. Fenoterol hydrobromide. It contains 500 mcg in 1 ml of solution, and 50 mcg in one aerosol dose.
  2. Ipratropium bromide... Its dosage in a solution for inhalation is 250 μg per 1 ml, and in an aerosol - 20 μg per dose of the drug.

Auxiliary compounds in the solution used for inhalation administration of Berodual using a nebulizer are benzalkonium chloride, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, purified water and sodium edetate. In addition to the active ingredients, the pocket spray contains distilled water and ethyl alcohol, as well as tetra-fluoroethane and citric acid.

Operating principle

The active components of Berodual have bronchodilator activity. The drug is a combination of beta-2-adrenomimetic and m-anticholinergic. Their action is mutually reinforced and manifests itself in the spasmolytic effect, which the drug causes in the smooth muscles of the bronchi.

Within 15 minutes after applying Berodual, bronchospasm is eliminated, and lung function improves... The maximum therapeutic effect of the drug is observed 1-2 hours after inhalation of the aerosol or inhalation. The duration of the effect can be up to 6 hours.

At the same time, the drug does not impair the production of mucus in the bronchi, and also does not have a negative effect on the process of gas exchange in the lungs. Its action is to relax smooth muscles in both the bronchi and blood vessels. Berodual is also able to prevent the appearance of bronchospasm due to allergies.

Indications

The reason to use Berodual in childhood may be:

  • Symptomatic relief for reversible bronchospasm, for example, caused by bronchial asthma or chronic obstructed bronchitis.
  • Prevention of bronchospasm in chronic pulmonary diseases.
  • Preparing the lungs for subsequent administration of other medications, for example, antibiotics, mucolytics (Lazolvan, Ambrobene) or corticosteroids.

From what age can you take?

According to the annotation to the drug, it is not recommended to do inhalation with Berodual to patients under the age of 6 years without first consulting a doctor. At the age of six years, the drug is administered only under medical supervision, and the dosage is calculated by the weight of the child.

Contraindications

Treatment with Berodual is not prescribed or used with great caution:

  • If hypersensitivity to any of its components is found. In such a situation, Berodual is dangerous with an immediate allergic reaction.
  • If the patient has heart disease and heart rhythm disturbances.
  • If the child has diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or pheochromocytoma.

Also contraindications to inhalation are fever, bacterial lesions of the ear and nasopharynx (runny nose, pharyngitis) and an acute period of pneumonia. You should not breathe Berodual with tracheitis and a tendency to bleeding from the nose.

Side effects

The child's body can react to the use of Berodual:

  • Tremor of the limbs.
  • Nervousness.
  • Rapid pulse.
  • Headache.
  • Cough.
  • Nausea.
  • Allergic rash.
  • Weakness.
  • Pain in the muscles.
  • Quincke's edema.
  • Vomiting.
  • Excessive sweating.

In rare cases, treatment with Berodual provokes convulsions, bronchospasm, arrhythmia, a change in mental state, urinary retention or changes in blood pressure indicators. The drug can also cause the appearance of angle-closure glaucoma.

Instructions for use

Solution

For inhalation with Berodual, a nebulizer is used to get the drug into the small bronchi. The dosage is determined individually, depending on the disease, the severity of bronchospasm and the duration of treatment:

  • For a child under 6 years old, the dose of Berodual should not exceed 10 drops (0.5 ml of solution).
  • With a moderate spasm of the bronchi, the initial dose will also be 0.5 ml of the drug for 1 procedure.
  • If bronchospasm is severe, the dose for children under 12 years of age is 2 ml (40 drops), and for 12-year-olds and older - 2.5 ml (50 drops).
  • A very serious condition requires an increase in the dose to 3-4 ml of the drug (60-80 drops). In this case, the maximum amount of liquid Berodual that a child can receive per day is 4 ml (under the age of 12 years) or 8 ml (over the age of 12 years).

The frequency of inhalation, if necessary, can be up to 4 procedures per day. Before use, Berodual must be diluted with saline so that the resulting volume of the diluted drug is 3-4 ml (the proportions depend on the dose of Berodual used). The child should inhale the drug through a nebulizer for 6-7 minutes until it is completely consumed. How many days you can breathe Berodual, the pediatrician should determine.

Only saline can be used to dilute the medicine. Distilled water is not suitable for this purpose. In addition, Berodual should be diluted right before the procedure, since the medicine mixed with saline cannot be stored.

Spray can

With an attack, a 6-year-old child is recommended to inhale 2 doses of such Berodual. If the drug is ineffective after 5 minutes, it is allowed to re-inhale two more doses. If this two-fold application does not make breathing easier, you should immediately call an ambulance.

If treatment with the aerosol form of Berodual is prescribed for a long period, then the medication is prescribed in 1 or 2 doses per application. Inhaling such an amount of aerosol, depending on the reason for the therapy, should be 3-8 times a day.

Before the first use, shake the can, then press the bottom 2 times. Then, before each use, remove the cap from the can and invite the child to exhale deeply (slowly), and then clasp the tip of the can with his lips.

During inhalation, they quickly press on the bottom, as a result of which 1 dose will enter the child's respiratory tract. Next, the patient should hold his breath and remove the tip, and after a few seconds, exhale slowly. Re-inhalation of another 1 dose occurs in the same way, after which the can is closed with a protective cap.

If the drug has not been used for more than three days, before inhaling Berodual, you need to press the bottom of the can so that the spray forms an aerosol cloud in the air. One package contains 200 doses, after using which it is recommended to replace the cartridge, even if some content still remains in it. To keep the tip clean, rinse it regularly with warm water.

Overdose

Exceeding the dose of Berodual recommended by the doctor leads to the appearance of tachycardia, an increase or decrease in blood pressure, heart pain, tremors, arrhythmias and other negative manifestations. The same symptoms will occur if the child accidentally drank the solution. DTo treat and eliminate the consequences of an overdose, doctors prescribe beta-blockers, tranquilizers, sedatives and other drugs.

Interaction with other drugs

  • Bronchodilation under the influence of Berodual will be more pronounced if treatment is supplemented with theophylline, anticholinergic and beta-adrenergic drugs. However, in this case, the risk of side effects will also increase.
  • If beta-blockers are prescribed together with Berodual, this will weaken the bronchodilatory effect of the drug.
  • The simultaneous use of Berodual and diuretics or corticosteroid hormones will increase the likelihood of a decrease in the level of potassium in the blood, which increases the risk of arrhythmia.

Terms of sale

Before purchasing Berodual at a pharmacy, you must present a prescription from a doctor. The average price of 20 ml solution for inhalation is 250-270 rubles, and one aerosol can is 450-490 rubles.

Storage conditions and shelf life

It is important to keep the package of Berodual out of the reach of small children at temperatures from 0 ° C to 30 ° C. The metered-dose aerosol has a shelf life of 3 years, and for an inhalation solution it is slightly larger and is 5 years.

Reviews

Parents respond mostly positively to the use of Berodual in children with an attack of bronchial asthma. They confirm the speed of action of the drug, but often complain of side effects, such as rapid pulse or nausea. Doctors call Berodual a highly effective drug and often prescribe it for asthma and other pathologies that provoke bronchospasm. In their experience, such a drug copes well with eliminating spasm in the bronchi and quickly facilitates the breathing of patients.

Analogs

Instead of Berodual, the doctor may prescribe the following medications:

  • Berotek... The active component of such a solution for inhalation is fenoterol. The drug is in demand for asthma attacks and other types of obstruction. Until the age of six, he, like Berodual, is prescribed only under the supervision of a doctor.
  • Ventolin... The active ingredient in such a medicine is salbutamol. The drug is produced in aerosol form and is used for asthma, chronic bronchitis and other lung diseases. Its use is allowed from 2 years of age.
  • Ipraterol-native. This is a complete analogue of Berodual in terms of active ingredients, prescribed for obstructive bronchitis and asthma. It comes in a solution for inhalation.
  • Pulmicort... This medicine is a corticosteroid prescribed for asthma and croup. Inhalation with this drug is allowed from 6 months. They help with severe shortness of breath, barking cough, hoarse voice and other symptoms of laryngeal stenosis.

  • Lazolvan... Such a drug is a group of mucolytics, therefore it is in demand for dry cough, in which the sputum is very viscous. Inhalation with Lazolvan helps to normalize the state of the bronchial secretions and facilitate its coughing up in tracheobronchitis, bronchitis and other pathologies. Treatment with this medication is often combined with the use of Berodual. First, they do the procedure with Berodual, and then the child breathes Lazolvan, as a result of which the cough becomes wet. However, due to an active wet cough after such a combination of drugs, it is not recommended at night.
