Suspension "Stopdiar": instructions for use

For childhood diarrhea, special attention is paid to nutrition and rehydration, but sometimes anti-diarrhea medications with antimicrobial effects have to be used. One of these tools is Stopdiar from Gedeon Richter. For children, it is most convenient to use it in the form of a suspension, because thanks to its sweet taste and liquid texture, giving it to babies is very easy. In addition, the use of this type of medication is possible even in infants, since such a medication is allowed from 1 month.

Release form and composition

Liquid Stopdiar is sold in an orange glass bottle with 90 ml of homogeneous liquid inside. During storage, its components can settle, but after shaking they are evenly mixed and the suspension becomes homogeneous again. The drug has a sweet taste, light yellow color and a pleasant banana smell. The bottle comes with a dosing double spoon that can measure either 2.5 ml or 5 ml of the medicine.

The main ingredient in Stopdiar is called nifuroxazide. It is he who provides the drug with antimicrobial properties and is contained in 5 milliliters of the drug in an amount of 220 mg. For a sweet taste, sucrose is added to the solution, and the smell of the medicine is due to the banana flavor. Other auxiliary components of the product include simethicone (it is presented in the form of a 30% emulsion), citric acid, carbomer, water, methyl parahydroxybenzoate and sodium hydroxide.

In addition to the liquid form, "Stopdiar" is also produced in capsules containing 200 mg of the active ingredient in each. Such a drug is prescribed for children over three years old, and when treating schoolchildren and adolescents, it can be replaced with another solid form of medicine - film-coated tablets. Each of these tablets contains 100 mg of nifuroxazide, and they can be given to children from the age of 7.

Operating principle

The active ingredient "Stopdiara" has a direct effect on microbes that provoke diarrhea - Escherichia, Shigella, Vibrios, Campylobacter, Clostridia and others. Under the influence of nifuroxazide, the reproduction of the pathogen stops and the release of toxins by microbes that poison the child's body. At the same time, the suspension does not act on beneficial bacteria. On the contrary, when taking Stopdiar, the balance of intestinal microflora is restored and maintained.

Indications

The reason for prescribing a suspension for a child is diarrhea, which is triggered by a bacterial infection. The remedy is used for moderate and mild diarrhea, if the general condition of the small patient is not disturbed (body temperature is normal and there are no other symptoms of intoxication).

In case of a viral infection, which is manifested by loose stools (for example, if the disease was provoked by a rotavirus or enterovirus), "Stopdiar" can be prescribed for prophylactic purposes in order to prevent the addition of bacterial complications.

Contraindications

The drug is not used in newborns - the suspension is contraindicated in infants up to 1 month old, and in case of prematurity for children over a month old, the drug should be prescribed by a doctor. In addition, the drug is not used for hypersensitivity to any component and for allergies to other drugs of the nitrofuran group. It is also necessary to refuse treatment with Stopdiar in case of some hereditary problems with the absorption of sugars, for example, if the child does not have isomaltase in the body or the patient has a fructose intolerance.

Side effects

The agent acts only in the intestine, that is, its components are almost not absorbed into the bloodstream, therefore, Stopdiar does not cause general negative effects. However, in rare cases, an allergic reaction may develop to the drug.

If, after taking the suspension, the child has a rash on the skin, swelling, shortness of breath, hives or other signs of allergies, you should immediately abandon further treatment, and if you have severe symptoms, consult a doctor.

Instructions for use

In children under three years of age, treatment with Stopdiar must be supervised by a doctor. The drug is dosed with a spoon, which is sold with the bottle. Before giving the suspension to a small patient, the medication must be returned to homogeneity by shaking the bottle several times. Further, "Stopdiar" is used according to the scheme that corresponds to the age of the child.

  • Infant over a month old but under 6 months of age you need to give 110 mg of the active substance at a time. This dose is contained in a small measuring spoon. The baby should receive the drug at intervals of 8 to 12 hours, since the recommended frequency of admission at this age is 2-3 times.
  • A baby who is already six months old, but not yet three years old, "Stopdiar" is given in the same dosage, that is, one measuring small spoon (110 mg of nifuroxazide). The medication should be drunk three times a day - approximately every eight hours.
  • For a child aged 3 to 6 a single dose is doubled, so you need to use a large spoon for dosing. The drug is given to the patient every 8 hours in a spoonful so that the baby receives 220 mg of nifuroxazide.
  • If diarrhea is diagnosed in a child over six years old, then he is prescribed "Stopdiar" in the same dose as in 3-6 years - one large measuring spoon (220 mg). At the same time, you can give the suspension three times a day, and more often - every 6 hours (in this case, the child will receive the medication four times).

The duration of drug treatment is usually 5 to 7 days. If, after a week from the start of taking Stopdiar, the diarrhea has not stopped, you need to stop using the suspension and show the child to the doctor.

An examination by a specialist is also recommended in the absence of positive changes after 3 days from the start of using the drug, as this indicates either the resistance of bacteria to nifuroxazide, or another cause of loose stools.

Overdose

Until now, there have been no cases of negative influence of excessive dosage of "Stopdiar" on the child's body. If a child accidentally drinks a lot of suspension, which is possible due to its sweet taste and storage in an accessible place, it is recommended to monitor the patient's condition - if it worsens, the baby should be shown to the pediatrician.

Drug interactions

The manufacturer does not recommend using Stopdiar together with drugs that inhibit the central nervous system, as well as with some other drugs. And therefore, if a child needs to take any medications, in addition to a suspension, their compatibility should definitely be checked with the attending physician.

It is allowed to combine Stopdiar with rehydration agents, and when used simultaneously with enterosorbents, you need to wait 1.5-2 hours between doses so that the sorbent does not reduce the therapeutic effect of nifuroxazide.

Terms of sale and storage

Suspension "Stopdiar", like other forms of medicine, is sold without a prescription. One bottle of such a drug costs 300-370 rubles. You can store the medication at home not in the refrigerator, since the recommended storage temperature for the solution is up to +25 degrees. While the bottle is sealed, the drug retains its properties for 3 years from the date of manufacture, however, after opening the cap and first use, the suspension can be stored for no longer than 14 days.

Reviews

The treatment with the liquid form of "Stopdiar" is generally responded positively. Among the advantages of the drug are its fast action, ease of dosage, sweet taste and rare side effects. The disadvantages of a medicine are usually referred to as a short shelf life and high cost, since there are analogues that are more affordable. Also, some mothers do not like the presence of auxiliary chemical compounds in the suspension. In a few negative reviews, parents complain that the drug did not help or caused an allergy.

Analogs

One of the most popular analogues of Stopdiar is Enterofuril. This medicine is also represented by a sweet banana suspension, which is used for the same indications. Side effects, dosages and contraindications for such drugs coincide, as well as age restrictions, since Enterofuril in liquid form can also be used from 1 month.

It is possible to replace "Stopdiar" and "Enterofuril" with other medicines containing the same active ingredient. Analogs are produced in liquid form under the name "Ekofuril", "Nifuroxahid-Richter" and "Mirofuril".

If the baby is diagnosed with nifuroxazide intolerance, the doctor will recommend another drug for diarrhea, for example, "Enterol", "Loperamide" or "Imodium", but you cannot give such funds to the child without the appointment of a specialist.
