Cough lozenges for children

In an effort to cure a child's cough, many parents try to use drugs to a minimum, turning to folk recipes. Among the long-term medical methods used by the people to help in getting rid of coughs, cakes are very popular.

Operating principle

Cough lozenge can be called an affordable and simple alternative to a compress with a more gentle action than cans and mustard plasters. She has an anti-inflammatory and mild warming effect.

Kinds

Honey

This is one of the most popular lozenges used to combat coughs in children. Such cakes can be used in babies from 6 months of age. However, an obstacle to their use can be an allergy to bee products, which often occurs in childhood.

To exclude an allergic reaction to the honey cake, before applying it, a small area of the child's skin should be smeared with honey. If itching, swelling or redness occurs, honey compresses should be discarded.

Most often, for the preparation of honey cakes, liquid honey, sunflower oil and wheat flour are mixed in equal parts (for example, a teaspoon of each ingredient). To enhance the warming effect, salt or mustard powder can be added to the classic recipe. There are also recipes in which honey is mixed only with table salt or only with flour, while after mixing the honey and flour, the mixture is heated in a water bath.

You can see the recipe for honey and flour tortillas in the next video.

Another recipe.

Potato

Such a cake effectively warms up the bronchial tree and almost never causes allergies and burning. One tortilla requires four potato tubers. Potatoes for tortillas are washed and boiled, and then ground together with the peel (kneaded or rubbed), after which three teaspoons of soda is added to the potato mass, as well as a teaspoon of honey.

The second option for potato tortilla is to add a tablespoon of vegetable oil, honey and mustard powder to crushed potatoes. While still warm, a mass in the form of a cake is placed on a cloth and a compress is made. The procedure is repeated until the cough is completely eliminated.

Mustard

This cake, made from mustard, effectively warms up the bronchi, so it is in demand for bronchitis, manifested by a dry, painful cough. Compared with mustard plasters, such a cake is softer, and the procedure is longer. At the same time, remember that the cake, the component of which is mustard, should not stay on the child's body for more than two hours. In addition, it is not recommended for babies under one year old.

The standard recipe is mixing dry mustard with vegetable oil and wheat flour. Each component should be taken in a tablespoon. Having rolled out the finished mass, place it on a plastic bag and attach the bag to the baby's chest outside.

Since the mustard cake can cause redness, it is advised to periodically remove and reapply the bandage during the procedure, and if the skin is very red, rinse it and no longer apply the mustard cake.

Rye

To make a cake from rye flour, you need to take a glass of such flour and a teaspoon of mustard, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil and honey to the dry ingredients, and then gently pour boiling water over, stirring until a doughy mass is obtained. In a warm form, such a mass is applied to the baby's body, after which it is covered with polyethylene and a warm cloth.

Instructions for use

  1. The baby's skin must be prepared for the procedure by lubricating with baby oil or liquid cream.
  2. Stir the ingredients until a thick mass is formed.
  3. Place the mass for the cake on several layers of bandage or gauze or on a cloth napkin.
  4. Place the cake with the fabric side on the baby's body and fix it with a cotton cloth, and then additionally wrap it with warm material, for example, a scarf.
  5. Cover the baby with a blanket and leave with the cake for 2 hours or longer (sometimes they are left overnight).
  6. Remove the bandage and rub your skin with warm water.
  7. Wrap the child again to maintain the warming effect of the procedure.

Where should you put the cake?

Cakes with antitussive action can be applied to the chest and back of the child. On the chest, the lozenge is applied to the area of the lungs so as not to affect the area of the heart. When carrying out the procedure on the back, the cake is placed directly on the bronchial area.

Is it better to do the procedure at night?

Cough treatment with lozenges is carried out once a day. In this case, the procedure is recommended in the evening. The compress can be done before bed 2-3 hours before the baby goes to bed. Also, the cake can be applied to the child's body just before falling asleep and left overnight. In this case, the duration of the procedure will be 6-10 hours.

Reviews

Mothers who have tried cakes made of honey, flour, potatoes or mustard on their children note that the procedure effectively eliminates the lingering cough left by ARVI and colds. Flatbread often helps out in situations when the acute phase of the disease is behind, its main symptoms have disappeared, but the cough has already lasted more than a week and will not go away. With a mild cold, sometimes two or three procedures are enough at the very beginning of the disease and the cough completely disappears.

Most often, they resort to honey cakes, and they are wary of mustard cakes, since there are frequent cases of skin irritation under the influence of mustard powder. Some mums prefer potato wrap because it is more affordable and safer for babies.
