Calcium-D3 Nycomed during pregnancy

During the carrying of a child, the load on the body of a pregnant woman increases, and her needs for minerals and vitamins increase. It is especially important to ensure that there is enough calcium in the food of the future mother, because such an element is considered one of the most important for the proper development of the fetus and maintaining the health of a woman during pregnancy.

If food cannot provide enough of it, they resort to special preparations that contain the right dose of calcium. One of them is Calcium-D3 Nycomed. Is such an additive prescribed during pregnancy, when it can harm the expectant mother or baby, and what analogs can be replaced if necessary?

Composition and form of release

The drug is presented by sweet chewable tablets, which have a convex round shape and white color. The tablets have no shell, their edges may be uneven, and the structure may be interspersed. They are packaged in plastic bottles and sold in 20, 30, 50 or 100 pieces.

The smell and taste of the tablets are orange or mint.

Each of them contains a combination of two active substances:

  • one of them is calcium in the form of carbonate, represented by a dose of 1250 mg (it corresponds to 500 mg of elemental calcium);
  • the second important component of the supplement is vitamin D in the form of cholecalciferol. Its amount in one tablet is 5 μg or 200 IU.

In addition to these substances, the formulation includes aspartame, povidone, sorbitol and magnesium stearate, as well as additives for taste and smell.

Action and indications

The main components of the tablets are important for the condition of bones, nails, hair, teeth and muscles, as they participate in the exchange of calcium and phosphorus. Taking Calcium-D3 Nycomed helps to fill the lack of both calcium and vitamin D, which has a positive effect on bone density, tooth mineralization, blood clotting, conduction of nerve impulses and muscle contraction.

The addition of vitamin D to the composition of the drug helps calcium to be absorbed in the intestines. The main reason for taking pills is prevention of calcium or vitamin D deficiency. In addition, Calcium-D3 Nycomed is prescribed for treatment if a deficiency of vitamin D and calcium has led to health problems.

Is it allowed for pregnant women?

According to the instructions for the pills, women in the position should be prescribed them with caution. This means that taking Calcium-D3 Nycomed while carrying a baby without a doctor's prescription and examination should not be. The doctor must determine whether such an additive is required for the expectant mother, as well as what dose will be optimal for her.

Without enough calcium in a woman carrying a child, the following problems are possible:

  • more hair will fall out;
  • nail plates will become more brittle;
  • teeth will begin to decay and become more vulnerable to caries;
  • bones will thin;

  • sleep may be disturbed;
  • possible convulsions or tremors of the limbs;
  • toxicosis or gestosis may develop;
  • the blood coagulation system will be disrupted.

For a baby, a lack of calcium is fraught with delayed growth and development, as well as an increased risk of rickets.

Usually Calcium-D3 Nycomed is recommended for women in the first and second trimesters. Starting from the 26th week, the medication is used only when indicated, because in the last trimester the fetal skeletal system has already been almost completely formed, and an excess of minerals can negatively affect labor (the baby's bones will become too dense, and this will make it difficult for the baby to move along the birth canal) ...

Contraindications

The drug should not be taken in the following cases:

  • if the tests showed an increased level of calcium in the blood or urine;
  • if there are stones in the kidneys of a pregnant woman;
  • if a woman has hypervitaminosis D;

  • if the kidney function of the pregnant woman is seriously impaired;
  • if there is a hypersensitivity to any of the components of the tablets;
  • with active tuberculosis or sarcoidosis;
  • if a woman has phenylketonuria, fructose intolerance, or a lack of enzymes involved in the digestion of carbohydrates.

Instructions for use

The tablet is advised to dissolve or chew during meals. Usually, for prophylaxis, a two-time supplement from Nycomed is prescribed, 1 tablet each.

The duration of admission is set individually, but on average it is at least 4-6 weeks.

Taking medication it is important not to exceed the dose prescribed by the doctor... Annotation to the tablets contains information that pregnant women should not take more than 3 tablets per day, since the maximum allowable dose of vitamin D for women in the position is 600 IU, and elemental calcium - 1500 mg. It is important to consider these dosages when taking multivitamin supplements for the expectant mother, which may include calcium or vitamin D.

Calcium-D3 Nycomed, like other calcium preparations, it is not advised to combine with many medicines, including tetracyclines, cardiac glycosides, levothyroxine, diuretics and some other drugs. If a woman is being treated with some kind of medication, then it is important to consider this before taking the pills.
