What diapers to choose for newborn babies (+ video reviews)

Hygiene products such as diapers have been used by parents for centuries. Back in the 18-19th century, mothers made cloth diapers and filled them with wool, grass or moss. Modern parents do not need to dodge this way, but they face another problem: which diaper is better to choose? This issue is especially relevant in relation to a newborn child.

Why do you need a diaper

A diaper has two main purposes:

  1. Move moisture and secretions from baby's delicate skin to avoid irritation.
  2. Prevent (or at least reduce) staining of clothes and diapers on top of the diaper.

Obviously, mothers themselves are more interested in diapers, and not babies, because it is the mother who will have to cope with the emerging dermatitis and wash the diapers.

What are diapers

All existing diapers can be divided into 2 large groups based on the duration of use.

Reusable nappies

Reusable nappies. The essence of such diapers is that they can be washed and reused many more times until the diaper stops serving its purpose.

  • Gauze diapers. These diapers were used by our mothers and grandmothers. The diaper itself is a square of several layers of gauze with a side length of 50 or 100 centimeters. To increase the absorbency, some parts of these diapers were padded with cotton. When the diaper gets dirty, it is easy to wash it with warm water and soap, dry it, iron it and can be used again.
  • Reusable panty diapers. This is a fairly new and modern type of diapers. Their base - panties - are made of waterproof "breathable" material. An absorbent liner is inserted inside the diaper and needs to be changed as it fills. The earbuds themselves are washable and can be reused.

Disposable diapers

Disposable diapers. These diapers are only used once. It is better to be in such a diaper no longer than 2 hours in a row., after which the diaper is removed and sent to the trash. There are several types of disposable diapers too.

  • Diapers with Velcro fastening. You need to put on such a diaper on a child lying down. The diaper is secured with Velcro straps between the back and front. Among them are diapers for newborns: on the front they have a cutout for the navel. This is very convenient, since the umbilical wound heals for several weeks and should not be rubbed.
  • Panty diapers. These diapers are more suitable for babies over 1 year old. In structure, they are identical to Velcro diapers and have the same 3 layers: the outer one is waterproof, the middle one is absorbent (turns the liquid into a gel-like substance and holds it), and the inner one, which directly contacts the baby's skin and protects it from irritation. The only difference is in the principle of putting on and fixing the diaper on the body: instead of Velcro, the panties have a wide girdle.

Disposable diapers scary stories

Some mums have strong prejudices against disposable diapers, attributing them dire effects on babies' health. Yet fears about using disposable diapers are greatly exaggerated. There is no substantiated evidence that they negatively affect the health of children and cause any problems in the future.

Mommies' concerns revolve around 3 main themes:

  • Disposable diapers cause infertility in girls and boys;
  • Using disposable diapers interferes with potty training;
  • Wearing disposable diapers leads to deformations of the legs and joints.

The first point is especially frightening for the parents of boys, since there is an opinion that in diapers there is a risk of overheating the testicles, which means, provoke spermatogenesis disorders. In fact, sperm cells begin to be produced at a much older age, so it is impossible to harm this process by wearing diapers.

Potty training is generally a matter of maturation of the nervous system and the emergence of a child's ability to control their excretory processes. From the point of view of neurology, the time for a pot does not come earlier than 1.5 years. (On this topic: how to potty train a child)

The last point is implemented in practice exactly the opposite. Disposable diapers are an excellent prevention of hip dysplasia, since the hip is just retracted to the right angle.

Choosing the best diaper for a newborn

Let's try to figure out what requirements the best diapers for newborns should meet.

  1. If a manufacturer you like has diapers marked Newborn - choose them. This is a special model for newborns with a notch in the navel.
  2. The diaper should protect the laundry well from leaks. The key to such protection is the correct size and elastic rubber on the back. The better the diaper adheres to the calf, the less chance of its contents getting out.
  3. It is better to refuse diapers with perfumed fragrances or impregnated with lotion - they can cause allergies.
  4. Since newborn babies pee and poop up to 30 times a day in total, the “correct” diaper should absorb well and quickly.
  5. Please note that the diaper is made of environmentally friendly breathable material.

Separately, I would like to highlight the recommendations for the use of diapers:

  1. Do not use diapers that are out of date.
  2. Before putting on a diaper on a baby, check its integrity.
  3. Do not stock up on the smallest diapers - they will come in handy literally in the first 2-3 weeks.
  4. Trust the recommendations, but do not miss the opportunity to try different diapers in your own experience. The requirements of mothers are very different, so only their own opinion and a sense of comfort in the baby will help to choose the perfect diaper.
