Breastfeeding with lactase deficiency (lactose intolerance)

Nowadays, babies are often diagnosed with "lactose intolerance" or, in other words, lactase deficiency, in which the baby's body is not able to process lactose. Therefore, with breastfeeding, mothers ask themselves whether it is possible to feed the baby with breast milk for this diagnosis.

If a child has a functional lactase deficiency, it is allowed to continue breastfeeding such a baby.

Breastfeeding can also be continued with a secondary form of lactose intolerance, which is caused by:

  • gastritis;
  • dysbiosis;
  • antibiotic treatment and similar factors.

At the same time, it is recommended to express about 1/3 of the milk from the breast offered to the baby so that the baby gets more hind milk.

For other forms of lactase deficiency, a doctor's consultation is necessary. Perhaps, lactose-free mixtures will be partially prescribed. Complete rejection of breast milk is necessary only in congenital form, which is extremely rare.
